Continue ReadingSunday marked the final day of the Legacy Classic and players were eager to make their mark. I stuck mostly with the 16u and 17u teams the first day, however I did check out a couple of 15u teams from the local area to see who stood out on day 2. We are going to dive into the day two with some analysis.
Kenzie Melcher | Nebraska Supreme | Guard | 5’10”
Melcher is a big guard who had her way in the first game of the day. Her opponent could not keep her out of the lane, driving in consistently for high percentage shots. One of the more impressive traits was her interior passing. Melcher earned some easy buckets but she also did a great job setting up her bigs once help rotated. She will need to keep perfecting her decision making for the better opportunity between shooting and passing, but she has a solid basketball intelligence and brings a physicality to the guard position that can create issues for opposing teams. Spring could be a launching pad for Melcher.

Dani Coyer | Nebraska Supreme | Center | 6’1″
If size and solid footwork interest you, Coyer is your player. She understands how to use her size to get position and get deep in the paint for close range shots. In the post, her feet glide and she has a soft touch that allows her shots to drop when hitting the rim. Her presence down low, instantly changes offensive game plans as she does a good job just getting long to block shots. With Coyer on being a sophomore, there is only more development and strength on the way which may cause many sleepless nights for opponents.

Juliana Jones | Nebraska Attack | Forward | 5’10”
Jones is coming off an injury last year and seems hungry to prove herself. She brings loads of energy and an aggressiveness that is exhausting to defenders. Jones was everywhere on the court taking defenders off the dribble, grabbing rebounds or just simply out hustling opponents to loose balls. She has solid forward size but the quicks of a guard, quickly getting into the painted area. She does well at handling the ball and can shoot with some range. This summer and fall could be the breakout Jones seems to desire.

Rylee Mclucas | Nebraska Supreme | Forward/Center | 6’0″
The Nebraska Supreme 2025 team has ton of length and skill, Mclucas is a prime example of both. Mclucas gave opposing teams fits today. She altered or blocked numerous shots and floated in the paint to wherever the ball was to ensure there was a challenge. Mclucas does a great job getting rebounds for easy put backs but has a skillset that showed she can create on the perimeter, even knocking down a long three. With upcoming graduation, there will be opportunities for Mclucas during the fall and she is showing why she deserves that opportunity during this offseason.

Sarah Gatwech | Nebraska Supreme | Guard | 5’9″
Gatwech attacked all Sunday. She took opponents off the dribble and took a good amount of contact all day. Gatwech applied pressure to defenses and made them play deeper defensively which opened some outside shots. Gatwech has solid size for a guard and can rebound well, creating some easy put back opportunities. She has long arms which makes challenging her jump shot very difficult. Figuring out how good she is offensively could pay huge dividends for North Star next year.

Serena Heeren | Nebraska Hoops Elite | Forward | 5’11”
In the second half of her afternoon game, Heeren took over scoring 6 points in a row to stretch the lead for the NE Hoops Elite team. Her length makes her seem even taller than her 5’11” frame. Heeren is excellent at flashing to the basket and is a strong rebounder, leading to high percentage buckets. She runs the floor well and never allows an easy shot for her opponent. The frontcourt of the Knights could be very scary for the state, as Heeren seems to be finding herself this spring.
