The fifth article in a series of 73 highlights the players who can send shots back better than anyone. Let’s hop in and see who the top returning qualifying shot blockers (in terms of total blocks) will be for the upcoming season.
Taryn Scheuermann — 6’2 C — 2020 — Van Buren
*181 blocks*
Sheuermann was easily the leader in blocks throughout the entire state last year. She had 181 blocks and the next closest was 48 blocks behind her. Furthermore, the closest returning player was 80 behind her. Look for Scheuermann to use her length once again this season and punish players in the lane. I won’t be surprised to see her eclipse 200 blocked shots this year. She is committed to Northern Iowa.
Brooklyn Meyer — 6’2 PF — 2022 — West Lyon
*101 blocks*
Meyer is the top returning freshman on this list and I fully expect her to really see an uptick in blocks. She has gotten a little taller as well as quicker over the summer and is looking for a huge uptick in blocks this upcoming year. She is going to be a really solid force once it all comes together. Meyer is one of the top prospects in the state in the 2022 class and that isn’t going to change anytime soon.
Lauren Wilson — 5’10 C — 2022 — Springville
*93 blocks*
Wilson caught a few people off guard around the state as she entered high school basketball last year. Wilson is a very refined defender who has the ability to suck her man into the lane and then punish the shot attempt. Love watching her play defense as it really looks like she is one step ahead at all times. Going through this next year will be key for her because players will understand she’s going to block shots.
Sharon Goodman — 6’2 C — 2020 — Crestwood
*90 blocks*
Goodman is a known player around the state, and it’s obvious why she should be. The total package down low she can score, pass, rebound, and block shots. She had 90 blocks last year and averaged just over four a game. She would have had more but it seemed like players wanted no part of the lane when Goodman was there. Her quick feet allow her to slide to easily contest shots. Goodman is an Iowa commit.
Danielle Hoyle — 6’2 C — 2021 — Paton-Churdan
*86 blocks*
Hoyle is one of those players that you watch and honestly don’t expect a super high number of blocks but then she ends up with five a game. Her ability to control the game from inside the lane is solid and she displays a solid defensive IQ allowing her to react quickly to plays. Hoyle has a good feel for the game and matched with some thunderous rejections she is a fun defensive player to watch.
Amanda Chizek — 6′ PF — 2020 — West Hancock
*82 blocks*
Chizek gets a lot of her blocks by being in really good position but she also garners a lot of blocks because she is so athletic. Chizek can adjust to the offensive player in the air and send back their shot with ease. The blocking that she holds is solid because players don’t expect her to block their shot. Chizek has really solid fundamental footwork and displays that in every game. If you want to see how to be able to adjust and block shots Chizek is the one to watch. She is committed to Grand View.
Jenna Brown — 6′ C — 2021 — Don Bosco
*80 blocks*
While Don Bosco might be among one of the worst teams in the state, Brown is among the best at sending back shots. On a per game basis Brown is ahead of quite a few players on the list because she only played in 19 games last season. That puts her blocked shots per game average over four per game. If Brown is able to play in 22 or 23 games this season I really think she could contend with 100 blocks on the year.
Tori Michel — 6′ C — 2021 — Marquette Catholic
*78 blocks*
Michel was one of those players who made this list because she simply knows how to block shots. It seems like every single year she is among the best in her class at rejecting shot attempts. Michel also proved to be very good at going and rebounding her rejections and getting the ball up the floor quickly. I love her aggression on the defensive end and it shows at the end of the year with her block total.
Haley Beminio — 6′ PF — 2021 — Belmond-Klemme
*77 blocks*
Beminio showed great blocking ability this past year as she continually was able to send shots back. Not many people around the state know who she is but she’s one of the state’s premier blockers, as evidenced by her inclusion on this list. As we get into this upcoming high school season she’ll continue to show that her length and timing ability is among the best in the state. A really fun defensive player to watch.
Nyamer Diew — 6’1 SF — 2020 — Sioux City East
*74 blocks*
Diew is the only non-post player on this list. She’s a supremely athletic wing who uses her length to send back shots that smaller guards launch. Her strength allows her to play in the post at times on defense as well and she collects block after block down there as well. This upcoming year Diew will likely be close to the 100 block mark after some really solid improvements within her game. Diew recently committed to Butler.
