Sometimes defensive stars don’t have the numbers that pop when it comes time for All_State selections. While I thought a State Finals run probably should have been enough to get Haywood or her teammate Eliana Valentin Florance a spot on the OCA squad. Haywood is headed to Division I Radford in the fall.

Recently set the record for most steals in a single game at Mustang, with 11 steals against Yukon. It’s a fitting honor for arguably the best defender in Oklahoma’s senior class. What’s crazy is her defensive impact goes beyond just steal column in the boxscore. She’s a quick and strong one on one defender. Haywood can stay with smaller guards. And battle with forwards around the rim. Usually racks up a lot of deflections as well, because she’s flat out disruptive.
Along with her defensive exploits, Haywood is a strong driver to the rim. And has shot it better from three this season. Another potential trip to the Class 6A State Tournament looms, as she looks to leave her mark on Oklahoma before heading to D1 Radford in Virginia.

Haywood grabbed my attention a couple of years ago at this same event. I love seeing players play the passing lane and that coupled with the “long and athletic” profile are pluses. She scored off the dribble, she rebounded on both ends and she applied heat “on the ball” showing she could pick pockets using her quick hands

A small forward that can score in many ways. I witness a nice smooth drive to the rim sliding in and out of players for the finished layup. Next time down she is spotted up knocking down the 3 pointer. Handles the ball with control and eyes up making crisp passes to her teammates for scoring opportunities. Moves great without the ball keeping proper spacing on offense. Solid cuts to the rim on curls with hands ready for the catch and finish.
After watching her play I can see why she earned defensive player of the year for her school team this season. Another high level player in the Class 2025 in Oklahoma.

An uncommon defender, Haywood is a big time athlete with an outstanding defensive feel. Knows when to move feet and use angles to stop opposing ball handlers, and when to gamble and create turnovers. On offense, she has a good first step that often ledas to a promising mid-range game or athletic and strong finishes at the rim. Likely an undervalued prospect in Oklahoma’s deep Class of 2025, especially given the athletic family she comes from.

What a pair of back to back Area games for the Mustang junior. She’s a defensive difference maker, with how quickly she covers ground to trap or stay in front of the opposing ballhandler. The amount of deflections and steals she created over the two games is flat out ridiculous. Offensively, she was a consistent threat as a driver, looking very comfortable finishing with her left hand when going left. While overall not looking bothered by contact on the rims. The growing influence of Haywood’s two way impact marks her as a very interesting wing prospect.

The athletic junior forward has no back down to her game. And her efforts, especially on the defensive end were a key part of Mustang’s rallying back from their early deficit. Haywood’s biggest impact on the defensive end where she was disruptive in passing lanes. Including one play where she tipped a pass, then was able to track it down before it went out of bounds and save it to a teammate. Plays like that became common for Haywood, with blocked shots, ripping the ball around on steals and swarming defenders as a trapper.
Offensively, she was effective as a strong finisher around the basket. As the game progressed she mixed in more of a floor game and even hit a deep three pointer. The junior had a nice spin move off a drive from the top of the key, that ended with her drawing a foul.
