About Imani
Expert Analysis
Jill Dunn | Prep Girls Hoops Scout
Imani has to play a lot bigger than she is sometimes especially on the defensive side of the ball. She is not a true post player, but she ends up guarding a lot of players taller and more physical than her. She does a good job of fronting the post and making the guards have to make an excellent pass to get the ball inside. McIver also uses her body well on the glass to box out her opponent.

If you are looking for a 6’0 athletic forward who can score back to the basket and always finds her way to the rim Imani McIver is your girl. She handles the ball well for her size and can step out and knock down perimeter jumpers. Her speed allows her to run rim to rim at ease, which always puts her in position for offensive putbacks. Imani is also known for her shot blocking ability. She has very good timing to alter a shot without fouling.

Ask many a coach and many of them will say they will prefer someone who makes the winning plays over those who make the flashy plays. McIver is the definition of someone who makes the winning plays – and many of the winning plays occur on defense as she is very difficult to score on. Not only does McIver’s six-foot stature provide a formidable height advantage but her length comes into play on defense as well. Much of what McIver does offensively is in close proximity to the basket but there is a 3-point shooting element to her game as well. McIver played in 23 games last season for 5A Division 1 Mauldin and has been at the varsity level since the seventh grade.

McIver arrived at this year’s Georgia Freshman Showcase from the neighboring state of South Carolina. Even moreso, McIver will be once again sporting the orange and brown of the defending 5A state champions in Mauldin. In Sunday’s early going at Next Play 360, McIver managed to impress by showcasing how versatile she can be despite standing at an imposing 5-foot-10. McIver will absorb plenty of contact in the interior and has no problems drawing contact which can give her team opportunities to complete free throws. Ball handling and activity away from the ball are also strong points of her game.

McIver just knows how to work on both end of the floor. A player that is a combo guard that knows how to use her skill set to her advantage. Showed her ability to rip from the wing and also knock down the triple. A workhorse on the boards which allows for second chance opportunities. Her ability to play with so much energy is what stood out most. A player that never seems to get tired. Watch for her to make an immediate impact this season.
