Harpring, who is a very good shooter from the perimeter and three, attacked her defender, got in the paint, and punished Kell all game long scoring inside ten feet. Kate made 15 of her 25 field goal attempts finishing the game with 40 points and I can’t remember her taking one outside of the paint the entire game. She was able to get by and around the initial defender and to the rim fairly easy, where she either pulled up from 3-5 feet or finished at the basket off the glass. Kate did all this against Kell’s impressive size, including four players over 5’10 and two six footers. Harpring did not have the best shooting night from the free throw line, but made enough to win the game. She was not going to be denied in her final game at Marist and her effort was obvious on the boards as she totaled 16. Now, Harpring will play in the McDonald’s All American game before enrolling in Chapel Hill and beginning her career at UNC.

North Oconee did a great job for a large part of the game making someone other than Kate beat them scoring the ball for Marist. When they did, Harpring showed excellent vision, anticipation, and skill, throwing laser-like passes to her teammates all over the court. Most were found themselves open due to the attention she was drawing. When North Oconee had to account for other players who were having big games, Harpring took advantage of holes that were not in the defense before. She scored in transition, from three, and hit her several midrange jumpers, which might be the best weapon in her expansive offensive arsenal. According to Basketball Bob Corwin, Kate is 44 points from passing Jill Razor (Athens Academy) climbing one place higher on the Georgia all time career scoring list. Something she could definitely get done if her team is to win and advance to the AAAA state championship game. Harpring, however, is more than capable of putting up that many points in the Final Four versus Cartersville and no one would be surprised if she does.

The number one player in Georgia showed up and played like it on Saturday scoring 38 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Harpring scored in about every way possible often with two North Oconee players guarding her. Her composure and decision making was as impressive as anything she did with the ball. Harpring’s eyes are always surveying the court and when she sees an opening she does an excellent job attacking it and either scoring herself or finding open teammates, something she did a great job of in this game. Harpring made several three pointers from different spots on the floor as well. Her ability and leadership give her teammates confidence and raises their level of play.
