Expert Analysis

Rihanna stepped up for Detroit Edison in marquee matchups throughout the season. She’s athletic, has advanced ball-handling control and dribble combinations, good balance, finishing dexterity on both sides of the basket, excellent court vision, and is a threat from beyond the arc. Rihanna should be on many radars heading into her final AAU season.

Rihanna is an athletic guard from DEPSA who separated herself at the Freshman Showcase in 2023. She has consistently demonstrated the qualities a highly recruited point guard should have during travel and high school competition. Rihanna has silky smooth handles and glides to the basket with balance off the dribble. She sees the floor well, has a strong/compact build, and shoots with confidence from beyond the arc. Rihanna will be a featured player for the Pioneers this winter and she was one of the top guards in the gym at Oakland Elite Camp.

Rihanna started Oakland Elite Camp strong by standing out during the stations. Her shifty quickness, tight handles, confident layups using either hand, and quality footwork were on display during the finishing drill. Rihanna used a nasty hesi-crossover and hesi-high pick up move to get by defenders for layups during the games. She’s a crafty finisher with excellent footwork and vision. Rihanna’s balance and ability to make secondary moves by changing speeds in the paint are unique components to her game. She’s a prospect I’m excited to watch this winter at Detroit Edison.

Rihanna played great for Michigan Crossover EYCL 16U at the LBI April Showers on Saturday. She split defenders with quick crossover dribbles and kept her feet wide with a balanced stance to pass, shoot, or continue driving to the basket. Rihanna finished layups effectively with both hands, knocked down mid-range jumpers, and swatted a shot away on defense. Rihanna used a hesitation-crossover dribble to beat her defender for a layup and buried a wing 3 in transition. She drove hard and initiated contact with a defender to score a strong layup off two feet.

play was at Detroit Mercy Elite Camp last summer as she dominated the older group of girls with her full bag of ball-handling attack dribbles and range to drain 3’s off the dribble. She used her athleticism to dominate defensively at our Freshman Showcase last fall to be a top performer, and displayed excellent vision/passing at Battle in the Mitten. I’m excited for her to step up for Edison this winter and look forward to watching her this weekend.

had herself an impressive day Sunday at the freshman prospect showcase. If the event did not tell you her grade you could mistake her for an upperclassmen because of how physical and strong she plays the game. The first time I saw Rihanna play was at Detroit Mercy’s Elite Camp this summer and she fit right in with top prospects. Some notes I had on her at the freshman showcase: strong drive with a right hand finish, double crossover pass, and relentless pressure. Rihanna has quickness to get to the rim and finish with either hand in traffic. She has a textbook behind the back step back (wow) and the accuracy from 3 to match her inside game. Her ability to score at all three levels, apply ball pressure, and shoot the rock will make her a must watch athlete at Edison this season. Read more about her great day here.
