I caught the majority of South County and Madison, two teams equipped to make runs at a state title. Fall league can be difficult at times because there’s no plays or sets to run, but watching these players ball out today was fun. The Stallions managed to pull away late for the win, despite a late push from the Warhawks. Gabbi San Diego (PG, 2020) ran South County’s offense as expected, and shows no rust or signs in attacking the basket and scoring in the paint, despite being the smallest player on the floor.
Madison’s guard duo of sisters Amalia (2021) and Tedi Makrigiorgos (2020) displayed good ball movement on the perimeter for the Warhawks and managed to get lots of good looks from three. If Madison is hitting those consistently this season, they will be a hard team to beat. They definitely aren’t the only two that can hit from deep for the Warhawks, either.
Right after they finished two more teams with high expectations took the court in McLean and Robinson. Elizabeth Dufrane (2020), the Drexel commit, displayed her ability to get her shot pretty much whenever she wants to, but she wasn’t the only threat on offense for the Highlanders. Robinson’s second team all-region PG Bella Edwards started the game and showed early that she is going to be a leader for the Rams this season. It was unclear why she sat out for a good chunk of the first half, but checked back in later and looked fine. Veronica Bubank (Center/Forward, 2021) impressed in the post for several of Robinson’s first half points. Also impressive on both squads was the defense, especially in the open court. I wouldn’t be surprised if both these teams played in their respective district final games (which would be a repeat for McLean), and then competed closely for their regions, even though they might not be the favorites right now.
If these games are anything similar to what the regular season is going to be like, we are in for a fun winter. I highly recommend getting out to see the action yourself, especially with this year’s senior class.
