Madison at Chantilly, January 14th, 7:30 PM
The Warhawks, sitting at 14-0, have displayed nothing but talent and won the majority of their games by double digits. They have depth, they are well-coached, and they can lock down on defense while also lighting up the scoreboard. Teams have yet to figure out how to stop this fine-tuned squad, led by two sister pairs of Amalia (2021) and Tedi (2020) Makrigiorgos and Grace and Alayna Arnolie (2022). In recent years, Madison has relied on the three to get them dubs, but this season it’s going to take more than a cold night of shooting for them to lose. Tomorrow’s matchup against Chantilly should be a competitive game, with quick-scoring PG Megan Baxter Megan Baxter 5'4" | PG Chantilly | 2021 State VA and three-point shooter Skylar Bibbee going up against the Warhawk guards. They also present a tall challenge in the post in Meghan O’Brien Meghan O’Brien 6'1" | PF Chantilly | 2021 State VA , the Lehigh commit and double-double machine, and her fellow forward Sophie Pavlech is another tall task the Warhawks may have trouble keeping in check.
South Lakes at Langley, January 14th, 7:30 PM
Currently, Langley is sitting at 8-4, and they have won five out of their last six games and recently handled rival McLean quite well last week. Tomorrow they face South Lakes (9-3), who have always been near the top of the Liberty District the last few years. They are currently on a four-game win streak of their own, and won their bracket in the Governor’s Challenge in Salisbury, Maryland over the holiday break. The Saxons are finding their rhythm on offense, and Marya Mufti is continuing to impress, as she scored 19 against the Highlanders. It will be interesting to watch her match up against Brianna Scott Brianna Scott 6'1" | SF South Lakes | 2021 State VA , the talented junior forward who is averaging just over 15 points a game, and already racked up 142 rebounds and 42 blocks on the season. Another good matchup will be at the point guard position, in Leila Copeland and Annabeth Holsinger.
Langley sophomore PG Annabeth Holsinger during Fairfax’s Holiday tournamentWT Woodson at West Springfield, January 17th, 7:30 PM
These two teams met last season for the Concorde district title, and it is very possible they will meet again for it in a month. Woodson currently leads the district at 10-2, with West Springfield just a game behind at 9-2. Sophomore Mackenzie Matheny is averaging almost 19 points a game, and will be a good matchup against Woodson forward Abby Pesansky, who is coming off a double-double in their victory over South County. Another good matchup at the guard position will be on display with Lexi White and Eunice Yoon Eunice Yoon 5'6" | CG WT Woodson | 2022 State VA . Most recently, the seniors on the Cavaliers have shown their maturity and experience, and are a significant factor in Woodson’s success so far this season. It will be interesting to see how they handle the young talents on the Spartans.
