Each year players out of this area pack up and head to colleges all over the USA and across all the Divisions. Not only are they going to these colleges but they are also making big contributions either right away or after a year or so there. So continuing that trend in the coming years are these outstanding players each with their own skill sets and abilities. They will ensure that girl’s high school basketball in Guilford County continues its success.
Kennedy Powell- 6’1” Sophomore- Forward- High Point Christian Academy– Leads this group of talented underclassmen and definitely deserves her top position. She is the new type of forward that all college programs are looking for that stretch four, who is effective in the post with her back to the basket but also has the ability to step out and make the mid to long-range jumper. All those boxes are checked with her she has good post skills can score with both hands over either shoulder, has great hands and footwork, but she can step out and make the jumper with ease either from close in or behind the 3 point line with knockdown ability. Add to that her ability to run the floor in transition and even has the ability to put the ball on the floor and is a willing passer. To prove the offensive skills she has already scored over 1000 points with two more seasons to go this is an incredible feat. She also can defend and is an excellent rebounder to the tune of 10 rebounds a game with the ability to achieve double-double games on the regular. She also has already blossomed into a leader being the team captain as a sophomore. Her honors include a place on the 3rd team All-Area team as well as the 3A all-state team. If she is not already on many Division 1 recruiting boards than those teams are late she is going to be a truly special player and when she is done her signature is going to be one of the most sought after in NC.
Mariah Frazier Mariah Frazier 6'0" | CG Ragsdale | 2021 State NC – 5”10” Junior- Guard- Ragsdale High School– Offense wins games but defense wins championships if this is your belief then you need defensive players to make this happen then you better make a place on your roster for this player. Her size, build and athleticism means she can defend any position on the floor well from point guard to post she can get the job done. She anticipates well and is at home in a pressing full court or half defensive scheme and she will be in passing lanes making deflections and steals. These skills led her to be named Conference Defensive POY honors. Her offensive skills are improving and at the moment her strength is in transition in the open court where her athletic talents allow her to run and finish around the rim. She was able to average 10 points a game and having over 100 assists shows she is an accomplished passer. Her talents led her to be named 1st Team All-Area and also to her attracting some Division 1 attention but this is only going to escalate during her senior year and she will have her choice of Division 1 schools to choose from.
Je’Bria Fullwood- 5’9” Junior- Guard- Greensboro Day School– Hard work pays off and if you work hard to improve your skills then that will lead to better results than the previous year and this player is a great example of that. As she continued to learn the game as a sophomore she just continued to work harder and harder to become a better player and she succeeded with a strong junior season. She is a strong and athletic player that plays hard at both ends. Her athletic ability means she can play multiple positions and she has learned to be a more efficient scorer and this will only improve, she is excellent in transition and her jumper is much improved this enabled her to score at an 11 point a game clip. She also showed her defensive talents to the tune of 10 rebounds and an amazing 4.6 steals per game. Her honors included PTAC POY, 1st All-Area and a spot on the 4A All-State team to name a few. If this year was an example of how much she works and improves in the offseason I can only imagine how good she is going to be in her senior season. Rest assured that her success and hard work will pay off with next level interest.
Hailey Blackwell- 5’6 Junior- Guard- Greensboro Day School– The prototype point guard a solid leader and floor general, an excellent ball-handler and passer, a competent outside shooter, a tremendous defender blessed with blow by speed that she can use to create shots for herself or her teammates. She led her team into a state championship game and the brink of a state championship. Her quickness and speed with the ball make her lethal in transition and open court but she also possesses a vast amount of basketball IQ. She is definitely is the point guard all coaches would want. Her talents led her to average 9 points a game as a pass-first point guard and also average 4 assists and 4 steals per game. Her honors this year include All-PTAC, 4A All-State and 2nd Team All-Area to name a few. All great teams have a great point show running the show being that extension of the coach on the floor knowing this, colleges will be making their way to see her and when they do they will be impressed and interest in her will only increase.
Tiir Nyok- 5’10” Junior- Guard/Forward- Southwest Guilford High School– This player has all those intangibles that you can’t teach athleticism, speed, jumping ability and toughness. She is at her best in the open court as she covers ground really well going both directions whether running the lanes on the fast break or running down an opponent, she can do it with ease. She can finish around the rim in the paint and her outside shot has come a long way and she has become a better knockdown 3 point shooter. This enabled her to score at a 15 point a game clip. Defensively is where her athleticism shines she is always in the passing lanes making steals and deflections but one of her many talents is running down opponents for blocks she does this more than any player I have seen in years she just never gives up on a play. These defensive talents led to 6 rebounds and 4 steals per game as well as All-Conference and 3rd Team All-Area honors. When you are the athlete she is and you play with passion and energy good things will happen and that is what is happening with her and this will have college coaches interested in signing her at the end of her senior year.
