They helped to make this shortened season the exciting and interesting one it was and for those returning next season gives us an insight into what we can expect next season.
Ashley Bowman- Sophomore- 5’9”- Guard/Forward – T. Wingate Andrews High School
The sophomore guard was instrumental in the success of the T. Wingate Andrews girl’s basketball team. An athletic guard that was a perfect fit on a team with two senior leaders and with her ability to score and defend she was a valuable starter on a team that went 23-4 and won the conference championship and a berth in the state playoffs. She continued to produce on the big stage with 16 and 13 points in both of the state playoff games. Her play saw her named to the All-Conference team as well as honorable mention on the All-Area team. The experience she gained will serve her well as she takes over the leadership role of the team next season. She will be one of the main players next season and expected to lead the team to possibly their fourth conference championship and a berth in the state playoffs.
Sequoyah Johnson- Senior- 5’7”- Guard- T. Wingate Andrews High School
Every successful team has a guard to lead it, to take charge and be the go-to person for that team regardless of the level of play. Sequoyah was that for her team and with her at the helm the team had a 3 peat as conference champions as well as berths into the state playoffs. She possesses all the necessary skills to make a guard successful she is an excellent ball-handler that took great care of the ball, she was an adept passer with great floor vision and a knack for getting the ball to the right person, she was a fierce defender and the head of the teams pressure defense and finally, she had a high basketball IQ. She was the team’s 2nd leading scorer and managed to produce 18 and 12 points in each of the team’s playoff games. Her play led to her 2nd selection on the All-Conference team and a spot in the Triad All-Star game. With her, at the helm the team had its 2nd best record in school history and her leadership will be missed next season.
Charley Chappell- Freshman- 5’6”- Guard- Bishop McGuinness High School
Basketballers coming out of middle school and not only earning a spot on the varsity but contributing and even leading that team speaks volumes of the special player they must be. Thanks to her hard work she was prepared to step right in that make an impact and what an impact she made. Already a talented player as a left-hand shooter who has 3 point range and knows how to play the game. As a freshman, she averaged 8 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals a game and led her team to a 20 plus win season and a berth in the East Regional Finals knocking off the #1 seed on the way in a game that saw her play a big role with 13 points and controlling the play. To have this much success as a freshman bodes well for the rest of her career ensuring this will not be the last time I write about her or her team. Her honors also included an All-Conference selection. Remember this player name as you are sure to hear a lot more from her and I will bet the colleges already know her name well if they don’t they soon will.
Tate Chappell- Freshman- 5’10”- Forward- Bishop McGuinness High School
To already be part of a sensational freshman duo is something to be proud of but when the other half of that duo is your twin sister it makes it that much more special. That is the case with Tate and Charley, written about above, who together played a major part in the successful season of their school. Tate is the taller of the two and though they both have special talents hers is just a bit ahead of her sisters at the moment. She is a versatile athlete and player that can score both in the post and step out and make the open jump shot making her a valuable offensive weapon. She has great hands and fundamentals for a player of her age which shows the hard work she has put in. She also rebounds the ball well and is surprisingly fast for a player of her size. She, like her sister, has a great knowledge of the game and just knows how to play the game and what is needed and at what time. She also defends the post well and can defend a few different positions to add to her versatility. She posted solid numbers for a first-year player with 11 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals per game and showed up big in the biggest game when they defeated the #1 seed and she scored 16 points in the victory. This led to her being an All-Conference selection as well as this honorable mention selection. She is on her way to being one of the elite players in NC and one to keep an eye on, as it is going to be exciting to watch her grow and mature and we will not be the only ones watching as her name has probably already found its way on college recruiting boards around the USA.
Michelle Petrangeli- Junior- 5’9”- Guard- Bishop McGuinness High School
Being one of the leaders on a young team especially one with two freshman playing key roles is a difficult role but one this player relished. Using her leadership and basketball talent she was able to lead her team to within 2 points of the state championship game. What allows her to be successful in this role is her skill-set which enables her to play both the guard and forward position and provide insight on both and to be productive at both on her way to averaging 10 points and 4 rebounds a game for a team that finished 24-5 and played in the regional finals. She is one of those players that plays hard and gives her all and leads by example with her attitude and work ethic. Her talents saw her selected to the All-County and All-Conference teams. She will get one more year to lead her talented young team, with all having a year of experience under their belts, look out for this team next season and don’t be surprised if they are the team to beat and play for and possibly win the state championship.
Ella Hedman- Sophomore- 5’10”- Forward- Caldwell Academy
One of the traits of special players is that they continue to work hard on their game, they continue to play hard regardless of the score, they never stop wanting to get better no matter the circumstances. All these traits are exhibited by this player as she continues to improve and lead a team that is below .500 but those results don’t stop her development. She is a good scorer in an around the basket and can make the mid-range shot, she has solid fundamentals which show in her passing and how she positions herself for rebounds. Her work ethic does not go unrecognized by her team as she was named caption as a sophomore. Considering how hard she works there is no doubt that she will return next year that much better. She was selected to the All-Conference team as well. Heading into her junior year she will be one of the players to watch and her steady improvement bodes well for her to possibly continue her career at the next level when the time comes.
