Obviously, these regions will change into next season but for these stories it was the easiest way to divide players and teams as equally as possible.
We will be writing a series of three stories for each region in the state and the categories are as follows: 2023’s to put on Your Radar, 2022’s who can Breakout, and 2021’s Who Should be Valued by Colleges.
We will continue to go through each region and aim to hit as many players as we can that we haven’t talked about previously. Here are five 2023’s who need to be on your radar.
Jenna Twedt Jenna Twedt 5'8" | SG Benton | 2023 State IA – Benton
One of the top scoring freshman in the state last year was Benton’s Jenna Twedt Jenna Twedt 5'8" | SG Benton | 2023 State IA .
Twedt helped the Bobcats win 13 games, averaging just over 18 points a night. She shot 36.5 percent from the field, almost 32 percent from the three-point line and 82 percent at the free throw line.
Along with scoring 398 total points, Twedt also contributed a team-high 70 assists with 76 rebounds, 56 steals and 21 blocks. Her steals and blocks also led Benton.
Finley Hall Finley Hall 5'7" | SG West Liberty | 2023 State IA – West Liberty
Had it not been for the aforementioned Jenna Twedt Jenna Twedt 5'8" | SG Benton | 2023 State IA , West Liberty’s Finley Hall Finley Hall 5'7" | SG West Liberty | 2023 State IA had bragging rights as the top Class of 2023 player in the region.
Hall, who started 18 of 24 games for the Comets, finished with 304 points to lead the way. She also had 144 rebounds, 56 assists and 56 steals, shooting nearly 40 percent from the field.
A 33 percent shooter from the three-point line, Hall buried 46 triples to lead West Liberty.
Makayla Boatman Makayla Boatman 5'6" | SG North Polk | 2023 State IA – North Polk
In her first year on varsity, Makayla Boatman Makayla Boatman 5'6" | SG North Polk | 2023 State IA carved out a perfect role for North Polk.
Boatman scored 260 points despite coming off the bench for the state runner-up Comets. She shot nearly 48 percent from the field and over 42 percent from deep, making 42 triples in all.
Along with her scoring, Boatman also contributed 51 rebounds, 36 steals and 32 assists.
Amara Jones – Mid-Prairie
It can be difficult coming into a team as a freshman and producing, but Amara Jones did just that at Mid-Prairie.
Jones scored 78 points, but did so much more than that. She recorded a team-high 77 steals and also led the Golden Hawks with 64 assists, adding in 67 rebounds with 10 made three-pointers.
Liza Schaeffer – North Polk
A second newcomer who helped North Polk with depth was Class of 2023’s Liza Schaeffer.
Schaeffer shot 50 percent from the field with 14 made three-pointers, scoring 81 total points. She also added in 45 rebounds, 31 steals and 26 assists, and is sure to have a bigger role in the coming seasons.
