Michigan proved to be one of the most talent rich states in the country and the competition and quality of play was very high. Today, we will honor a Prep Girls Hoops Michigan Player of the Year and Honorable Mentions for the class of 2024.
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Riley Abney Riley Abney 5'9" | SG Ortonville Brandon | 2024 State MI (SG, Ortonville Brandon)
Abney put up some ridiculous numbers this season and they have to be recognized.
Braxcynn Baker Braxcynn Baker 5'11" | CG Lowell | 2024 State MI (CG, Lowell)
There aren’t many better all around guards in the midwest than Baker.
Katelyn Baney Katelyn Baney 6'2" | PF Paw Paw | 2024 State MI (PF, Paw Paw)
Baney is another player that put up take over the game type of numbers.
Na’kiya Bonner Na’kiya Bonner 5'6" | PG Detroit Edison | 2024 State MI (PG, Detroit Edison)
Bonner might have the most upside of any prospect in the state.
Jaidyn Elam Jaidyn Elam 5'9" | CG Detroit Country Day | 2024 State MI (CG, Detroit Country Day)
Elam led her DCD team all the way to the semifinals.
Madelyn Geers Madelyn Geers 5'9" | SG Kent City | 2024 State MI (SG, Kent City)
Geers got even better as the season rolled along and was huge in the playoffs for Kent City, and absolutely tremendous on the big stage of the Final 4.
Devin Hagemann Devin Hagemann 5'6" | PG Detroit Edison | 2024 State MI (PG, Detroit Edison)
Hagemann is so strong with the ball and will end up as one of the best and most efficient passers in the state.
Mia McLaughlin Mia McLaughlin 5'9" | SG Frankenmuth | 2024 State MI (CG, Frankenmuth)
Frankenmuth needed players to step up due to injury and McLaughlin did just that. She was a huge part of Frankenmuth advancing all the way to the quarterfinals.
Ryan Moorer Ryan Moorer 5'9" | SG Madison Heights Bishop Foley | 2024 State MI (G/F, Bishop Foley)
I love what Moorer did this season, establishing herself as a high level talent with a bright future.
Gabrielle Reynolds Gabrielle Reynolds 5'10" | PG West Ottawa | 2024 State MI (PG, West Ottawa)
Reynolds has a game that is mature well beyond her years. In my opinion, she should be a nationally ranked prospect.
Christian Sanders Christian Sanders 5'7" | PG Detroit Renaissance | 2024 State MI (PG, Detroit Renaissance)
Sanders made a statement this year with her quickness, ball handling, and defensive effort.
Brook Simpson Brook Simpson 5'10" | SG Saugatuck | 2024 State MI (SG, Belding)
Simpson carries so much talent and a work ethic to match. She’s another prospect that, in my opinion, should carry a national ranking.
Mckenzie Swanson Mckenzie Swanson 6'3" | PF Bloomfield Hills Marian | 2024 State MI (PF, Bloomfield Hills Marian)
If you’ve read my work for a while, you know how much I like Swanson as a player. She’s an absolute beast and one of the top post players around.
Leila Wells Leila Wells 5'9" | SG Chelsea | 2024 State MI (SG, Chelsea)
Wells is a silky smooth athlete and the type of star that other players love playing with.
Lily Zeinstra Lily Zeinstra 6'0" | PG Byron Center | 2024 State MI (PG, Byron Center)
Zeinstra is an elite shooter and is and will be a record breaker in that category.
CO-PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Indya Davis Indya Davis 5'9" | SG West Bloomfield | 2024 State MI (SG, West Bloomfield) and Summer Davis Summer Davis 5'9" | PG West Bloomfield | 2024 State MI (PG, West Bloomfield)
For the first time, I have to name co-players of the year. These 2 just fit together like peanut butter and jelly. Their skills offset each other as perfectly as their personalities do. I just couldn’t bring myself to separate them for this award. Quite simply, they both deserve it.
Indya Davis Indya Davis 5'9" | SG West Bloomfield | 2024 State MI is racking up the post season awards for 2022. We just named her the Division 1 Final 4 Most Outstanding Player.
Obviously, both were huge in West Bloomfield’s run to the state championship this season. Any time that a sophomore leads the way or has a HUGE influence in a team’s run to a state title, they’ve got to be the frontrunner for Player of the Year. Indya Davis Indya Davis 5'9" | SG West Bloomfield | 2024 State MI scored at a high clip, showing an offensive game that’s mature well beyond her years. She reads the ball off the rim and attacks the rebound from the perimeter. Davis is also a plus defender that can really frustrate her opponent and force a good number of turnovers. Summer Davis Summer Davis 5'9" | PG West Bloomfield | 2024 State MI is an elite ball handler that can set the table for her teammates as well as get her own buckets when her team needs it. The Davis twins and their teammates at West Bloomfield have to be the odds on favorites to repeat next season.
