After multiple camps, showcases, conversations with college and high school coaches and of course the start of the season the chips have been lined up. This is such a talented class which is evident with the fluidity of the top ten in each update. Even the number one spot hasn’t had a back to back member in consecutive updates. This class has been putting it on the line each time on the court as this is their pivotal recruiting season. After all the pondering and tallying her are some key takeaways from the updated rankings.
Kyndal has been tearing it up in each event she has played in since middle school. She already has a WCAC Championship under her belt and is seeking more. I remember her breakout in the Turf Wars Showcase playing up as a 7th graders and everyone wanted to know who was that girl. The next year or so people had issues spelling her name correctly. Now Kyndal is a household name in the DMV and with her play over the summer and recently in front of two members of the McDonald’s AA nomination committee, her respect should be cemented permanently. She has a nice mixture of shooting and drives. Her pull-up jumper is a thing of beauty and when she is on she has a switch that shows no mercy to the defender. She can play any perimeter position as she has the handle and vision to run the point efficiently with excellent defense. She has star quality and a high IQ that no doubtedly comes from being in a basketball family.
Highlights
Leah has a knack for opening games up with a three pointer as I’ve seen it from her multiple times. Her shot is so pure that when it doesn’t go in most people are surprised. She is the most underrated top ten player that I can recall basically because she has been surrounded by all-Americans her entire high school career. Make no mistake, Leah balls at the highest level and has the ability to turn a tie game into a blowout in a few possessions. You would think that with a Curryesque shot she’d be a gunner but, she is one of the most unselfish scorer’s that I’ve ever seen. Outside of her shooting she can run the point and she plays solid defense, she also gets to the basket and finishes plays.
Aliyah transferred into Maryland from Virginia and has been turning heads all through the fall and preseason. She even had an opposing coach questioning where she had come from. She is fast, really fast which makes her a terror on the defensive end and a huge problem to deal with while on offense. She is pretty shifty in tight spaces which allows for her to get finishing angles in the lane against post players. With an injury keeping Zanai Barrett out for a month Aliyah has been required to do a lot to compensate and she has been up for the task. It will be interesting to see how things shape up when Barrett returns next month and all the focus isn’t geared to stop her.
Ava’s stock has been on the “Rise” all summer and hasn’t fallen off since the start of the season. She is long and uses her entire 6’1 frame making her appear to be around 6’4 on the court. She is very athletic and makes plays attacking and can hit from outside. She has been showing versatility operating both from the high post and the wing. She has also proven to be an excellent shot blocker with great timing. She has a good mix of inside and out for high school but, will most likely be a perimeter only player in college.
Maddie made a real push for the top spot landing at #2. Her point guard skills are at the major division one level and her shot is amongst the best at her position. She is smart and keeps her dribble low out of the reach of defenders. She handles doubles and traps well making the right play. She excelled over the summer showing a variety in her game and she has adjusted on her high school team to get others involved within the system. The Mustangs may need to tap in to more of her game in a WCAC that is a little more balanced than it has been in recent years.
