There are 16 teams participating and nearly every single one of those teams have found themselves in the rankings early on this season. The stage is big, but the players came to play. Here are some of the players that stood out to me on the opening day of the Queen of the Commonwealth tournament. These players are from the 2024, 2025, 2026, and 2027 classes.
Riley was really excellent all-around, as she has been every time I’ve gotten to watch her play. She makes some really great passes and her court awareness is special. She knows where her teammates are and she sets them up so well. Riley can handle pressure and she’s a knockdown outside shooter. However, she can also score inside of the perimeter off of jump shots, floaters, layups, etc.
When it comes to Thurmond, the effort is always there. She consistently plays hard and she continues to show her ability to score both inside and out. Her quick first step allows her to drive past defenders and the way she moves without the ball stood out to me. She’s a great teammate as well.
Thornsbury is such a solid player. She plays so hard and she can really make stuff happen on both ends of the floor. Defensively, she brings intensity and can get into the passing lanes to grab steals. Offensively, she can score at all 3 levels and she can also create for her teammates.
Medley started the game off by knocking down back-to-back 3s which was fitting for the sharpshooter. However, she also made some excellent drives to the basket and proved that she’s a threat at all 3 levels. Medley was handling the ball well and made some great passes also.
Walker is actually only in the class of 2027, we just don’t yet have that option available on the site. Walker is a really impressive young guard. She runs the floor consistently and was finishing well in transition. She was finishing layups on both sides of the rim while also showing off her outside shot. Walker can handle the ball well and was making great passes.
Tinelli is so quick with and without the ball in her hands. She can really apply a lot of pressure defensively and she can get out into the passing lanes to get steals. She was knocking down outside shots, as well as getting to the rim. She also threw some really good passes and she ran the floor really well.
Highlights
Tessa Miles
Tessa Miles
Miles continuously got into passing lanes and showed her ability to really disrupt an offense. She played with a lot of intensity and heart. I was also impressed by her quick passes in transition, getting the ball down the floor to give her teammates great looks at the basket. Miles creates offense like a true PG should.
