I had seen these teams already this season. You can read my Liberty-Southeast Polk report HERE, my Liberty-Iowa City West report HERE and my City-Cedar Rapids Jefferson report HERE.
The following are some standouts from Friday’s Liberty-City matchup:
If I’m scouting Liberty, there’s an excellent chance Barney is standing out. The Minnesota State recruit controlled this game on both ends of the floor, finishing with a game-high 16 points. She handles the ball really well and is tough to contain off dribble penetration. She can knock down the outside shot if defenses sag. She’s a superior on-ball defender.
Schroeder does a little bit of everything for the Lightning. She takes pressure off Barney by bringing the ball up the court and getting Liberty into its half-court offense. She’s a dangerous outside shooter, hitting 2 of 4 trey attempts in this contest. She’s not afraid to stick her nose in the lane and crash the glass, and she plays hard on defense.
Avery Gaudet
Avery Gaudet
Gaudet is a player most successful teams feature. She contributes in a number of areas, complementing her teammates very well. Offensively, she can handle the ball with both hands, dribble penetrate – getting all the way the basket or kicking it to an open teammate, and knocks down outside shots. She stays in front of opponents on defense.
Palmer’s minutes were somewhat limited in this game due to foul trouble but it couldn’t stop her from racking up 15 points. She’s a tough kid who goes all out on both ends of the floor. She marries that intensity with a well-rounded skill set. She can score from all over the court, rebounds and defends. As I’ve said before, you won’t find many better sophomores in the state.

Driscoll is settling is as a freshman point guard in a traditionally strong program. I love the way she attacks the gaps of defenses, drawing help and kicking it to open teammates. She shows off a beautiful outside shot. As she becomes physical stronger, she will be even tougher on both ends of the court. And she’s pretty tough already.
Emmy McComas
Emmy McComas
The third of City’s trio of outstanding underclassmen, McComas provides a physical presence for the Little Hawks. She attacks the basket off of dribble penetration and rebounds very well, pulling down a game-high 10 caroms against Liberty. She’s usually one of the better defenders on the court.
