This year’s rendition occurred at the Raleigh Convention Center in its downtown. Fittingly enough, it is also one of the nuclei of the women’s basketball universe given it is home to NC State – one of the women’s college game’s top tier programs.
We at Prep Girls Hoops were on hand for the weekend’s festivities. Out of those prospects that made the trip from the Palmetto State, there was lots of veteran talent that are making their final go-rounds through the club realm.
Fresh off of Cathedral Academy prevailing as 2A SCISA state champions, Griffin’s plan is to translate that into momentum on the AAU circuit this go-round. Griffin’s Coastal Select 17U team was on the receiving end of a 41-26 defeat to Elevate Elite Richmond 17U, but Griffin proved to be a bright spot as she put 12 points on the board. A good number of Griffin’s scoring occurred because of her ability to attack the rim and finish strong. Griffin can play the role of the classic floor general and knows when to score and when to pass. Free throw shooting has also proved to be another of her strong points.
Thompson is taking to the AAU circuit this time following a 2022-23 season with Westwood that saw the Redhawks advance all the way to the 4A state championship game against North Augusta. She can make plenty of plays near the rim and good bit of those plays will result in her getting fouled and taking her chances at the free throw line. Thompson is also one who can deliver plenty of defensive plays as well. SC Future 17U scored a 49-26 victory over CP3 Basketball Academy 2024 in one of the final games of Friday evening’s action. Thompson tallied eight points.
Where does one go following scoring 2A championship glory with Gray Collegiate? One goes to the travel realm to display exactly why one was such a key element in that 2A state title run with the War Eagles. Mintz finished with eight points in SC Future 17U’s commanding 49-26 victory over CP3 Basketball Academy 17U. Included in her overall offensive arsenal is the ability to drain her attempts from behind the arc. Defensively, she will also collect her fair share of steals to create additional possessions for her team. Mintz got her live period in the Hoop State off to a very lively start on Friday.
Jackson is used to sporting green uniforms. Whether it is the double-shaded green uniforms of SC Future or the pine green tint that is a signature of Dutch Fork, Jackson can be mean in green. She was once again on Friday night at the Raleigh Convention Center as she managed a 12-point outing to lead her team to a victory. Jackson presents a formidable presence in the paint and stands ready to box out in case of an opponent’s missed free throw. She plays with a heads-up mentality which enables her to corral steals and is a force to be reckoned with on either the offensive or defensive glass.
Lowcountry Premier Ballers teams played some of their more entertaining matchups of the Saturday at Raleigh Convention Center against combatants from either Virginia or Maryland. Geddis rallied her team from a halftime deficit to eventually claim victory over Team Mid-Atlantic Legacy 17U with a 17-point performance. Geddis also had herself a productive game in terms of whistles as she only had two personal fouls called against her for the game. She combines her talents with a high basketball IQ and one of the ways she puts points on the boar is via the 3-point shot.
Highlights
The goal of any high school/AAU player during a live period is to turn said live period into a thrive period. Jones did just that in her game on Saturday afternoon against Maryland-based Team Mid-Atlantic Legacy 17U. Her 14 points went a long way in willing Lowcountry Premier Ballers 2024 17U to a comeback victory over the team from the Commonwealth. Jones has no problem attempting tough shots as she understands a good bit of them will fall. Near the rim, she can reject shots and if she feels she may not be in position for a rebound, she will tip the ball to a teammate that will be in better position to secure possession.
It is not how one starts, but how one finishes. That is one of the oldest maxims in not only sports, but in life. Sports-wise, Causey lived up to that idiom on Saturday afternoon when her Lowcountry Premier Ballers matched up against Team Mid-Atlantic Legacy out of Maryland. Causey finished with 10 points and eight of those points were placed on the scoreboard in the second half when Lowcountry Premier Ballers 17U was in the throes of a come-from-behind effort. Rebounding, calling for the ball and drawing contact to find her way to the free throw line are among the strong suits of her game.
