That school was Presbyterian College – a Big South program based in Clinton, South Carolina. Its main arena – Templeton – recently underwent an upgrade and was ready just in time to host this year’s camp which welcomed varsity and junior varsity teams from three states.
It also welcomed us at Prep Girls Hoops. Here is a look at the robust youth movement that was on hand at the home of the Blue Hose.

Belton-Honea Path had a tough go of things on Monday at Presbyterian as they matched up against 5A powers such as Spring Valley and Spartanburg. In the matchup against the Vikings, Thompson shined as a bright spot who proved she could hold her own against a 5A team like the Vikings. Thompson managed to display how accurate she can be with her 3-point shooting as she drained several triples in that contest. She can give a team productive minutes as either a one or two guard and has no problems getting to the free throw line. Thompson is a rising sophomore who plays with the confidence of a senior.
Every spring and summer basketball season gives fans an opportunity to become acquainted with new faces that will adorn their favorite team’s colors. Evans, a 2027, is setting herself up to be one of those faces for a Dorman team that has been among the class of the 5A landscape. She is a smart player who understands how to get the ball through the basket and overall help her team. There is not much about her game that is flashy – it is simply effective and that is a less-than-appreciated art in today’s basketball. A rising freshman with plenty of upside, Evans looks to fit in well as she continues her ascent with the Cavaliers.

One of the entertaining contests of the day’s action occurred between an Upstate 5A team and a Midlands 5A team. The Upstate 5A team in question was Dorman and a young rising freshman played a major role in the 35-30 victory the Cavaliers scored over the Vikings. She tallied eight points in a game that – as the score indicated – saw points come at a premium. What makes her hard to contain was her ability to combine ball handling capabilities with speed. She will find driving lanes to the rim and can even get in position to grab rebounds close to the basket.
Stellar performances among rising freshman were abound throughout the day at Presbyterian. J.L. Mann wanted to make sure it joined the 2027 party by virtue of what it saw from this skilled up-and-comer. Hailstock was involved in one of the more entertaining contests of the day as said Monday concluded with her Patriots matching up against another 5A foe in Dutch Fork. While young, her talent is indicative of someone who is much more experienced. Among that diverse skillset includes the ability to put points on the board on a consistent basis and play every play with a heads-up attitude. This can particularly come in handy when on the defensive end of the floor.
When teams game plan for how to beat Dutch Fork, they still will have to game plan for how to keep its interior attack in check. The 5A Silver Foxes will give opponents a mix of experience ( Christyonna Jackson Christyonna Jackson 5’10” | PF Dutch Fork | 2024 State SC ) and youth (Crumlin) in the paint. Crumlin stands at 6-foot-2 and typically operates as a traditional big. She played her first season last year at the varsity level as an eighth grader. Crumlin will use every bit of that height edge to her advantage as a scorer, defender and rebounder on either end of the floor. Having more experienced bigs to play alongside (as was the case last season and will be once the 2023-24 campaign commences) will continue to be a boost for her development.
Lucas may be a rising eighth grader, but she has the skillset of a seasoned veteran. Lucas was another key factor in South Pointe’s success last season. She averaged 9.7 points and 2.8 steals per game last season. If she has an open look from 3-point range, she is likely to take and make said attempt. Lucas will also attack the rim with plenty of tenacity and plenty of velocity. If this is what she is already bringing to the court as young as she is, she will be even scarier once she gains even more experience playing at the high school level.
