One of the latest tournaments we had the privilege of attending, the Steel Hands Holiday Classic at Heathwood Hall Episcopal, was another indication of that.
Of course, any girls basketball tournament that takes place at the home of the Highlanders holds added significance given it is the home court of the defending SCISA 4A champions.
We at Prep Girls Hoops were on hand at Heathwood Hall with the opportunity to take in three contests – two of them being championship games. Here are the three we watched.
Aiken vs. Heathwood Hall
The first contest saw a couple of 4A teams doing battle – with one of those 4A teams being from the SCHSL ranks.
That team in question is the Green Hornets out of Aiken. They began the tournament by defeating another SCISA 4A combatant in Hammond by a final tally of 60-53.
The Skyhawks are a tough team. The Highlanders are a juggernaut and will likely be that way for the next couple of seasons given their core is made up of juniors. When all was said and done, the first game – which would decide the champion of the tournament’s Plaid Division – went the way of the Highlanders by virtue of its 66-46 defeat of the Green Hornets.
How The Game Progressed
Heathwood Hall was the designated road team – despite the tournament being held in their building. Home or away, home whites or road navy blues – the Highlanders are a force to be reckoned with. This was proven again in the first quarter as Heathwood Hall held a 19-11 lead over Aiken with eight minutes having elapsed.
As the second quarter wore on, the Highlanders began to impose their offensive and defensive will that overwhelmed the Green Hornets on both ends of the floor. With two quarters in the books, Heathwood Hall’s lead was 18 – 40-22 over Aiken.
The third stanza was not the offensive clinic for Heathwood Hall that the second was when one looks at the scoreboard. The Highlanders only outscored the Green Hornets by a margin of 14-8, but Aiken was still outscored. It was 54-30 with three in the books.
The Green Hornets displayed that they would not go down without a fight in the fourth quarter. Aiken actually outscored Heathwood Hall 16-12 in the final frame. But enough distance was put between the two teams to ensure another Highlanders victory.

One of them was senior Norriyah Bradley Norriyah Bradley 5'8" | CG Aiken | 2024 State SC who finished with 14 points. Attacking the rim, ball handling and organizing a halfcourt offense are among Bradley’s strong points.

Lugoff-Elgin vs. Richland Northeast
In the girls basketball realm, the Demons and the Cavaliers may not be two teams that ring too many bells nowadays. But they are a pair of 4A teams and they did win their respective games on Monday to advance to the Blue Division championship game.
The Demons earned a 68-41 victory over Northside Christian to advance to Tuesday’s Blue Division championship game. As for the Cavaliers, they advanced by virtue of the 44-31 victory they scored against High Point Academy.

One could paint the second quarter in Cavaliers colors since the ensuing eight minutes were all Richland Northeast all the time. Rocky River vs. Hammond
The final two matchups of the day were both consolation contests. One of those contests would pit a team from South Carolina against a team from North Carolina.
The assembling in question from the Hoop State was Rocky River. The 4A Ravens did not play the first day of the tournament, but was in action in one of the final matchups of the two-day get-together.
Their opponent was a SCISA 4A team in Hammond who, as mentioned earlier, were on the receiving end of a hard-fought, 60-53 defeat to Aiken.
This one would go the way of the Skyhawks with the final score being 45-24 over Rocky River.
How Things Progressed
