Hold on, a change is coming. Hold on, everything is going to be alright. I remember when I was younger, a song with those lyrics came on the radio. Those lyrics got me thinking about how kids who seek a new environment could potentially impact a program and shake up a district. Majority of the time, new blood in a program can ignite a team and spark them for amazing runs. Look at what Tatianna Stovall did for Bradley Central last year. I mean she became an additional piece that not only her job plus more, but freed up others to do their thing as well. She helped deliver another state title to the Lady Bearettes over in East Tennessee.

Then look at [player_tooltip player_id='513245' first='Natavia' last='Alber'] heading over to Northview Academy. She was a part of a two headed monster that tore up the district. It was a favorable move that solidified a dynamic player for years to come in the area. These are just two examples that are positive ones that create excitement throughout a program and headlines throughout an area.

Unlike the transfer portal in college sports, student-athletes in the state of Tennessee just can't freely jump from school to school (at least not yet). There has to be a legitimate reason, a bonafide physical address change, and other legal stuff that goes into granting a decision by the TSSAA committee to allow that player to play without sitting out. I am not going to get into all that jargon and stuff, but the whole purpose of this article is to highlight how players on the move can impact a new program.

This year (unsure of all the roster moves just yet), there are a lot of girls on the move. The decision of course is for the betterment of the individual, however some will sit out due to proximity of their move. Overall, the transferred kid will come in and spark a ball club with hopes of delivering championship aspirations. Players just don't move for the heck of it, but come in looking to play a pivotal role. These young ladies will not only come in and impact their new school this year, but be key pieces for the next couple of years. A lot of these girls are huge difference makers, gamechangers who can rejuvenate a program. They are fresh blood, girls who can inspire others to take their game to new heights. Kids don't transfer from a school they were playing at to go to their new school to sit on the bench. No, they come in looking to add value to a ballclub with hopes of enhancing their new schools dreams of bringing home the hardware at the end of the season.

Each year, all schools get newcomers such as incoming freshmen. Normally it take a year or two to get these first year players acclimated to the little nuances and speed of the high school game. Not all schools get impactful kids who can come in and change the trajectory of a ballclub. Public school or private, it doesn't matter, a kid with talent can come in and make a big difference especially if they have experience. Sometimes, there is an adjustment period for the transfer kid. It may be getting the feel of a new district. It might be learning a new system, new teammates. Just like anything new in life, there is a learning curve to it. At the end of the day, the experience of the individual will eventually kick in and players will settle down in their new environment.

I know a lot of people oppose kids transferring, however I personally feel it brings excitement to the game. In my opinion, if you are a competitor, it should spark a certain feeling in you. For instance, think about David and Goliath. If a new girl were to move into a district I was coaching in, you better believe I am going to be excited as all get out to prove them wrong about trying to infringe on my territory. That's just me. Also, moves such as this adds value to a conference. I mean people want to see new champions each year and a transfer kid could bring hopes of knocking off last year's champs. My last comment about a kid transferring is this, so what if kid wants to go somewhere else. They are kids, not collegiate or professional athletes. They have 4 years of high school ball and let them enjoy it. It's just a game and even though the overall goal for a program is to win a championship, a kid also has collegiate aspirations. If one school provides a better opportunity for them to reach that personal goal, go for it. That's just my opinion.

As we get closer to the tip-off of the 2024-25 women's basketball season, we are going to see some new faces in new places. Some may only play JV this year, while others can come in and impact a program right away. Either way, as a fan, enjoy the moment. As a competitor, get ready to compete. Having players go to a new environment is good for the game. Embrace it.
