High school tryouts are quickly approaching. Growing up, I remember the excitement of reading preview magazines for my favorite sports teams and learning about key players before the season started. The enthusiasm and excitement I have for the Michigan Varsity Girls Basketball season has been building since the end of AAU, which leads to my endeavor to write these conference preview articles. Every coach and team in the state has the desire to perform better than they did the previous season in their conference and in the playoffs. Each year there are coaching changes, graduations, transfers, and varsity additions that shift the dynamics of teams in the conference. The Macomb Area Conference consists of a whopping 36 teams divided into six divisions with six teams per division. The Red Division includes Macomb Dakota, Eisenhower, Utica Ford II, Grosse Pointe South, Grosse Pointe North, and Port Huron. The White Division includes Anchor Bay, Cousino, Lakeview, Lanse Creuse North, Romeo, and Utica. The Blue Division includes Chippewa Valley, Fraser, Marysville, Port Huron Northern, South Lake, and Sterling Heights Stevenson. The Gold Division includes Warren Fitzgerald, St. Clair Shores Lake Shore, Lanse Creuse, Marine City, Roseville, and St. Clair. The Silver Division includes Center Line, Clawson, Lamphere, Sterling Heights, Warren Mott, and Warren Woods Tower. The Bronze Division includes Clintondale, Eastpointe, Hazel Park, Lincoln, Madison, and New Haven. Each Division selects a total of ten All-Conference players and a conference MVP.

Brooklyn is stepping into a lead role for the Cougars this season and she looks more than capable of becoming the team's court general. Brooklyn has shifty handles, downhill speed, finishing finesse, and deadly 3-point accuracy. Her defensive pressure creates turnovers and she is very effective at dishing the ball to open teammates. Brooklyn was consistently a top performer at Fall League and I expect her to have an All-Conference caliber season in 2024. She will be a major reason why Dakota competes for the Red title again this winter.

Eisenhower has a loaded group of freshman talent joining their ranks this season. Madison has consistently caught our attention with her play at individual and team events over the past few months. She has a smooth pull-up jumper off the dribble and is a sniper from beyond the arc. Madison scans the floor and dishes strong passes using a variety of passing angles to create assists. Her shifty combo dribbles create space from defenders to drive, dish, and shoot. Madison will be a reason why Ike contends for the Red title in 2024.

Emily earned All-Conference honors as a junior, helping Henry Ford win the White. Her versatility will be crucial as the Falcons enter the Red Division. Emily anticipates passes like a hawk to create steals in the press and looks to make unselfish passes to teammates. She battles inside for rebounds, uses her length to block shots, powers up to score putbacks, and finds space to knockdown 3 pointers. Emily works on both ends to impact the game and she will be an All-Conference candidate again in 2024.

Maddy received All-Conference recognition as a junior and has continued to excel during the off-season in travel and summer competitions. She dribbles the ball on a string and blows by defenders with a burst to the basket. Maddy rips the nets from 3-point range, pushes the ball to score fast breaks in transition, converts tough shots in the paint, and harasses ball-handlers to force turnovers on defense. She will be an All-Conference performer again in 2024 and is an excellent addition to the Wayne State Warriors 2025 recruiting class.

Eva was one of three All-Conference selections for Grosse Pointe North last season as they finished runner-up in the Red. She rips the ball hard to drive past defenders and score layups. Eva keeps her head up as she drives and delivers accurate passes for assists when her shot isn't open. Eva has an accurate mid-range jumper and creates steals with her quick hands defensively. Her game is fun to watch because she shares the ball and looks to create shots for teammates. Expect Eva to be a featured player at Grosse Pointe North in 2024.

Ava is a high-energy point guard with elusive ball-handling skills and a scrappy defensive edge. After graduating two college basketball players, Ava has an excellent opportunity to step into a lead role for the Red Hawks. She drives hard with a burst downhill to score layups and dishes assists to teammates. Ava pressures the ball to deflect passes and cause steals on defense. She sinks mid-range and 3-point jumpers, which will be an advantage for Port Huron this winter.
