High school tryouts have arrived and scrimmages will be kicking off this weekend. Growing up, I remember the excitement of reading preview magazines for my favorite sports teams and learning about key players before the season started. The enthusiasm and excitement I have for the Michigan Varsity Girls Basketball season has been building since the end of AAU, which leads to my endeavor to write these conference preview articles. Every coach and team in the state wants to perform better than they did the previous season in their conference and in the playoffs. Each year there are coaching changes, graduations, transfers, and varsity additions that shift the dynamics of teams in the conference. The Tri-Valley Red Conference includes eight teams: Frankenmuth, Freeland, Alma, Essexville Garber, Bay City John Glenn, Saginaw Swan Valley, and Bridgeport. Each team plays twice (home and away) with a conference champion determined by record.

Frankenmuth has won four consecutive conference championships with an undefeated conference record during that span. However, Freeland exercised demons by defeating Muth in the Regional Semifinals last season, signaling a potential power shift in the conference. However, Frankenmuth still has history on their side and plenty of firepower coming back. They graduated one of their star scorers (Mia McLaughlin, 2024 Ferris State), but retain multiple All-League players including sharpshooter [player_tooltip player_id='409313' first='Clare' last='Conzelmann'] (2025, Lake Superior State), forward [player_tooltip player_id='1059992' first='Izzy' last='Bernthal'] (2025), and point guard [player_tooltip player_id='866167' first='Grace' last='Brenner'] (2027). Muth adds a top five prospect in the 2028 class with [player_tooltip player_id='932742' first='Macy' last='Donovan'] joining their roster. Freeland returns their All-League prospects with explosive playmaker [player_tooltip player_id='716675' first='Karie' last='Keefer'] (2025, Northwood), versatile forward [player_tooltip player_id='918932' first='Addie' last='Seemann'] (2025), and budding star [player_tooltip player_id='1039079' first='Jozelynn' last='Begick'] (2027). New head coach Breanne Short will lead the Falcons in what should be a two-team race for the conference title this season.

Gracie led a surging Alma squad to their first district title since 2016. As a junior, she earned First Team Honors, averaging 18.4 pts, 3.6 rebounds, and 3.5 steals per game. Gracie poured in eye-popping numbers with 20 points in 13 games and two 30-point performances. She drives to the basket with a determined burst and finishes tough layups in traffic. Gracie has a smooth stroke from 3-point distance and proved her next-level value continually at tournaments and elite camps during the off-season. Gracie will be an exciting point guard prospect to watch this winter and an excellent addition to a college program following her senior season.

Fiona is a jack-of-all-trades kind of player for BC John Glenn and she leads the team in every visible aspect of the game. Fiona drives hard to the basket for layups, makes unselfish passes to open teammates, and hits shots from the perimeter. She battles for 50/50 balls, rebounds, and sets the standard for toughness. Fiona creates steals on defense and I expect her to earn an All-League nomination for the Bobcats as a senior.

Rylee had an outstanding junior season for Garber, earning Second Team All-League Honors and she will be a featured player again for the Dukes in 2024. Rylee is a physical player who isn't afraid to mix it up inside, but also a deadly 3-point presence on the floor. She handles the ball well as a facilitator, has a smooth jump shot off the dribble, and battles for rebounds. Rylee creates turnovers with her defensive pressure and uses a variety of combination dribbles to score contested layups. I expect another All-League caliber season for #24.

Macy will be more than a difference-maker for Frankenmuth this winter; she has the potential to earn an All-League nomination as a freshman. Macy competed against seniors on a top travel circuit and continued to shine at many events during the summer. Macy has length, quickness, and lights-out perimeter shooting skills that make her a weapon on the offensive end. She pushes the tempo with her dribble, finishes around the basket, and shifts the defense with her passes. Frankenmuth lost a top guard from the 2024 class, but added the top shooting guard in the 2028 class. They are still the favorites to win the TVC Red until proven otherwise.

Jozelynn was expected to be a gamechanger for Freeland after she dominated at our Freshman Showcase and the Headliners Invitational leading into her freshman season: she did that and more. Jozelynn teamed up with Karie to form a dynamic guard duo that led the Falcons to an exciting Regional Finals appearance. Her ability to bury 3-point shots and drop floaters in the bucket off the dribble make her a challenging matchup. Jozelynn uses her length to disrupt passing lanes, blocks shots, and generate steals. She will be a major contributor for a Freeland team that has the potential to win their first conference title since 2020.
