In The Gym, 10 Top Bigs from this Past Week

I had a very busy week in the gym last week catching games from three tournaments. Each field was full of talented players. While not comprehensive below is a look at ten of the top bigs I saw.    Bernal brings size to a team that did not have much last season. She uses her good frame to box well to gather rebounds and scores quickly after an offensive rebound. Active on both ends she scores well around the hoop on post-ups.     Foxworthy plays both the 3 and 4 spots on both ends depending on matchups. She has solid speed, good length, hustles and works with quickness on the defensive end. One of my favorite plays of the week involved Foxworthy leading a three-on-two break. Driving the lane she split the two defenders after freezing them by showing the ball like she was dishing and did so at speed.     Gipson is a strong, athletic and physical player that commanded double and triple teams from Bishop Carroll even if her guards just looked at her. Rarely getting a clean look she worked hard to get shots off the catch and was very effective with any daylight. She was always a threat to take a rebound end-to-end with speed. Very, very good at boxing people out.     Constantly a focus of Trinity Academy double teams, she worked with speed and quickness inside and out. She is a fast, athletic scorer who plays a physical game on both ends. Henderson handles it strongly in transition and rebounds the ball with hops, jumping to the ball well.     Long is smart, athletic player with a diverse game. Her presence as a perimeter threat makes her strong handles that much more effective. A terrific shot blocker inside and on the perimeter. A walking three point play due to her ability to knock down free throws. Terrific hops but has a tendency to get airborne biting on head fakes.     I wrote earlier that Patty is, without question, one of the top young players in 3A and easily one of the top young bigs in the class regardless of classification. A major scoring threat around the hoop who accumulates rebounds with her length and hops Patry is also a quality rim protector. Needs substantially improve at the free throw line to turn into a tranditional three point play machine.     Robinson was a consistent force defending and scoring the ball on both ends. Athletic with a solid base and good length, she jumps to the ball well rebounding. Robinson is a terrific scorer within eight feet with either hand.     Big, solid frame that she uses well on both ends. Good hands catching in traffic. Good free throw shooter. Runs well but not especially fast. Hits the mid-range jumper well.     Athletic frame and great length. Strong handles to go off the bounce. Really good jump step to score with length. Jumps to the ball well on the boards.     from 1/31 article - It was great to see Stuhlsatz and company after their sub-state loss a season ago. She and the rest of Owls are vastly improved. On both ends against Haven's sizeable and talented bigs, she just flat battled. While I lost track at 9 Stuhlsatz may have had a double-double given she scored 12 points. Fast, very smart, strong and with good hops also generated a couple steals. A fierce, athletic, hard-nosed team who will not be an easy out come the post-season.
