Open Division Playoffs: Flagstaff/Kellis Notes

On Tuesday February 18th the Flagstaff Eagles traveled to Glendale to take on the Raymond Kellis Cougars. Flagstaff came in winners of 12 of their last 13 contests and the Cougars came in winning their last 13. The game was close game throughout the contest with neither team ever establishing control. When Kellis appeared to be pulling away in the fourth quarter, Flagstaff got within three points with less than a minute remaining. Kellis was able to hold off the Eagles at the end and won the contest 71-67.    Here I look at a few of the standouts of this contest    Mallory was playing at a high level throughout the game. She was playing with excellent pace and was carving up the defense off the dribble. Shani was hitting deep 3's as well as getting in the lane and finishing with floaters.      As evidenced by her effort Teegan came to play. She was hitting shots from three as well as getting to the basket and finishing through contact. Martin was just as tough on the defensive end as well as a rebounder.      From the start of the game, Luz size and length was a problem for the defense. When she wasn't crashing the offensive boards for putbacks, she was getting the rebound and going coast to coast. She shot the ball at a very high rate especially from the mid range.     This was my first time seeing Nez and I was impressed with her overall game. She is a shifty ball handler with a good change of speed. She also has active hands on defense. She also showed the ability to shoot the long range shot.      Walker was one of the smallest players out there, but she played like the biggest. She handled the defensive pressure thrown at her very well by splitting double teams and got into the lane with ease and finished with some nice floaters. She was just too strong for whoever tried to guard her.     Neal was a pleasant surprise for the Eagles. She handled the ball well as she knows how to shield the defender off with her body. She got into the lane effectively and made good decisions once she did. Lexi never forced her shots but rather she took shots that were in the flow of the game.     Jeorgia has improved her game quite a bit since the beginning of the season. The lefty has expanded her offensive game. She now attacks the defense with more confidence and displayed the ability to go right. On defense she has become more of a ballhawk on the ball with her active hands and quick feet.     Carter is a prospect who displayed good inside-out skills offensively. She has a nice touch around the rim and from the mid range. Where she really stood out is her range from the three point line. She shot it easily well beyond the line. On defense she is a solid rebounder and contests shots very well.
