High School basketball is moving closer to the state tournament, which means the 2025 travel circuit season is right around the corner. While everyone (including myself) has fixated on high school hoops, some of Michigan's top 8th-grade prospects have competed in travel circuit tournaments for months. Word traveled that Select Events was hosting a tournament at Morey Courts in Mount Pleasant on Saturday, which was too perfect an opportunity to pass up. UTS, Michigan Storm Elite, MBA, and Mystics were all in the house with several of Michigan's future top prospects competing on the court. The Prep Girls Hoops Freshman Showcase will be the premier event for 2029 prospects to demonstrate their best skills in front of our scouts, but I wanted to get a head start learning about the girls before our event in August.

During my time watching the 2029 games on Saturday, these were the forwards who impressed me the most.

Gabby looks like a premier post prospect in the 2029 class and she showed it for UTS at the Winter Series on Saturday. Gabby battled inside to secure rebounds on both ends and finished contested putbacks. Her length and effective footwork made it difficult for defenders to guard her in the low post. Gabby sealed her defenders with a wide base and spun to score multiple layups with both hands. She jumped up to catch a pass, crossed over a defender, and scored a contested layup with her left through contact. Gabby has the confidence to use counters, drop steps, and step-throughs. She converted a baby hook layup with her left and knocked down free throws from the line. College coaches should see her compete with UTS this spring.

Taryn gave Mystics Select an advantage inside at the Winter Series on Saturday. She secured many rebounds, muscling her way into position for offensive boards. Taryn moved well without the ball, cutting to the basket and finishing multiple layups. She scored off two feet in the paint, swatted shots away, and converted free throws at the charity stripe. Taryn has height, mobility, and coordination as a center that will make her an exciting next-level prospect.

Nyla was dominant in October against varsity players and I enjoyed seeing her show those abilities again on Saturday at the Winter Series. She blocked many shots inside and deflected passes using her long arms on the defensive end. Nylah sealed defenders in the low post and finished layups off the glass. She maneuvered into a good rebounding position and scored offensive rebound putbacks. Nylah pushed the ball in transition with her dribble, knocked down a pair of free throws, and finished many contested layups off two feet. She looks like a top frontcourt prospect and one college coaches will want to watch with Michigan Storm Elite in the spring.

De'Niyah faced a challenging opponent at the Winter Series and her fierce determination grabbed my attention. De'Niyah was an extremely physical rebounder for UTS in the game, securing multiple offensive rebounds. She worked hard to seal defenders in the paint, scoring a strong drop-step and-one layup and a high-rip step-through layup. De'Niyah finished multiple layups off the glass with a soft touch and offensive rebound putbacks. She is a forward who will attract attention from college coaches with performances like that this spring.
