Setting the tournament record for made free throws, going 42/50 over three games, and coming up one point short of tying the 6A scoring record in pouring in 94.
From the moment she hit a long jumper to open a stomping of Wichita East in the quarterfinals Askew set the tone for the Panthers' play. She averaged a double-double in points in rebounds as well as nearly 4 steals per game. Askew showed off end-to-end break leading ability off the rebound, physicality and hops rebounding and scoring inside. Follow my link for more

Borders returned just before the Owl's post-season run and it could not have been more timely. In a heartbreaking, quarterfinals overtime loss to Wichita Heights she was a major factor in the Owls rally to get to overtime and nearly win the game, helping put the Falcons on their heels in crucial moments. Borders nearly put up a double-double in 21 minutes of play. She showed solid speed, great hands, strength in the paint and headiness on both ends.

The Eagles came up just short of repeating as the 3A state champion and the ringleader that is Hanni put up some big numbers in the run. A chunk of that was demolishing the 3A state tournament record for made free throws, going 38/44. She consistently showed the ability to involve her teammates in the offense, carry the team when buckets were needed and be disruptive defensively. Over her three games she averaged 23.7 points, 5.66, assists and 3 steals. Follow my link for more.

In the tough overtime 6A quarterfinals loss Wichita Heights Cooley showed some serious game. She hit shots and none were bigger than the pair of threes she canned back-to-back with just over a minute left in regulation. She also opened overtime scoring with a interior, challenged bucket out of a pivot. Smart, heady and absolutely dangerous with a clear look from the perimeter. Nailing 3/5 three point goals she finished with 15 points, 4 steals and 3 assists against just 2 turnovers.

For me the 6A state tournament was a coming out party for Clemons. Backing up in the post she showed grabbed a rebound late that led to two free throws against Olathe West. She made good decisions to give ground or hold position, staying out of foul trouble. Clemons showed solid hands and passed well out of the post including when clearing rebounds.

Wills and her back court mates were terrific adjusting to game-to-game defensive game plans and in showing great energy the entire 3A tournament. For her part Wills' perimeter shooting, steal and turnover generating ability and scoring in transition and off drives were consistently strong. In addition to averaging 12.7 points per game Wills averaged more than 4 steals and assists per game. Follow my link for more.

Holzmeister had a terrific 3A state tournament, averaging more than 13 points per game including going 13/17 from the line. Her play defensively against opposing shooting guards and small forwards was terrific. Her solid build, length, interior quickness and transition speed enabled her to match up with anybody she guarded. In the tournament opener she was primarily responsible for shutting down Osage City's high scoring freshman [player_tooltip player_id='899198' first='Kaelyn' last='Boss'] while piling up 23 points on 9/13 shooting as the Trojans hammered the Indians in the second half to win by 26 running away. In their semi-final loss to Halstead her 15 rebounds were only two short of the Dragons' total. Follow my link for more.

The Trojans' return to the state tournament ended with a first round loss to Silver Lake. After digging a hole in the first quarter Girard shaved the Eagles' lead to 6 points a few times and Coester literally was a big piece of why. Despite having 7 turnovers her solid size, length and smarts enabled her to score 12 points, going 2/4 from three, while gathering 6 rebounds (3 offensive) and 4 steals. She continuously fought foul trouble but when on the floor Silver Lake had serious difficulty handling her and forward Erika Boatman together.

I have written before about how crucial Yoder is as a playmaker and floor leader to the Swathers. A great deal of what she brings does not show up in the box score. She scored a couple buckets, picked up a couple assists and steals but just being on the floor running things and defending opposing point guards was huge. Follow my link for more.
