For now, we at Prep Girls Hoops had a chance to glance at the laundry list of names in our 2028 rankings and figured it was an opportune time to make a few changes.

While many across the state know who the headliner sophomores are, there were also plenty of names that moved up our latest rankings that, perhaps, are not as ballyhooed but are still more than deserving of recognition. Without further ado, here are a few of those names.

Prospects who stand at 5-foot-10 like Phoenix does and can play as a point guard will always be intriguing. Phoenix put together one of the signature freshman campaigns across the Palmetto State this past season. She played in 27 games last season for Burke which moved up from 1A to 2A. Phoenix averaged 17.7 points, 8.6 rebounds, 4.1 steals and 1.7 blocked shots per game. Her Bulldogs benefitted greatly from her heroics. The team finished last season with a 21-7 record and won its region with a 10-1 showing. Another solid season from Phoenix will further solidify Burke as 2A contenders.

Woodham's Darlington team was another group that made a move up in realignment. The Falcons went from 3A to 4A. She made a jump into the top 10 of our 2028 list. She recently completed her latest AAU season wearing the uniform of One Force and is poised to translate that success into an impressive sophomore season in Darlington purple. Along with her point-getting prowess, Woodham places plenty of emphasis on ball distribution which is why she led the Falcons in assists last season. One also has to watch out for her on defense as she is a constant threat to force an opposing team into a turnover and take advantage of said miscue.

Samuel is another name on a team which moved up in classification last season. Lugoff-Elgin made its move from 4A to 5A (Division 2). One may look at the Demons' 8-18 record as something to scoff at, but considering this team has been stuck between one and five win purgatory for the last several seasons, eight victories is a success by Lugoff-Elgin standards. Samuel's eighth grade season was one that raised eyebrows – her freshman campaign last year where she wore Demons colors established her as a statewide name to watch. Samuel averaged 14.8 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.6 steals per game.

Marcengill maintains a consistently active athletics schedule. Not only has she played volleyball in addition to her basketball pursuits at 3A West-Oak, she has also played AAU on the Adidas circuit with [program_tooltip program_id='1231019' first='Upward' last='Stars 3SSB']. Marcengill lifted her Warriors to a 17-8 and a 6-2 region record with both losses coming against eventual 3A state champion Walhalla. She played in all 25 games this past season for West-Oak and averaged 12.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 steals per contest. If that was what Marcengill got accomplished as a freshman, imagine how she will build on that as a sophomore.

One of the stories of this past season in the SCISA ranks was the emergence of Spartanburg Christian as a true contender. Caldwell's play took the Warriors from five wins in 2023-24 to an 18-win campaign last season and a semifinal berth in the 3A state playoffs. She nearly averaged a double-double in her freshman season. Caldwell played in 25 games last season for Spartanburg Christian and averaged 23 points, 9.9 rebounds and 4.3 steals a contest. Her standing at 5-foot-9 makes her taller than one's average point guard as well. Similar numbers this season from Caldwell can give plenty of Spartanburg Christian backers visions of playing in Sumter in February.

Bonaparte has been a part of a lot of winning basketball as of late at 1A Hunter-Kinard-Tyler. She has played at the varsity level since she was in the seventh grade and her Trojans have become 1A contenders in large part because of her heroics. When one becomes part of the [program_tooltip program_id='783909' first='Palmetto' last='76ers/A'ja Wilson Elite'] program as Bonaparte did, one knows they have built a statewide profile. One can place Bonaparte at either of the guard positions in a starting five. Bonaparte may only stand at 5-foot-5, but she will get herself in position to corral rebounds and is a playmaker on the defensive end of the floor as well.
