Critical in that trek is ensuring one is operating at peak performance throughout the next several months. One way to do that is by participating in showcase events – such as the recent FBC Jungle event which occurred at ReCreation Athletics in Columbia.

We at Prep Girls Hoops were on hand for this past Sunday's festivities. Anyone who knows Palmetto State high school basketball knows it has a robust youth movement and it was in full effect this past weekend in the Midlands. Here is a look at a few exceptional eighth graders.

Alexander may be an eighth grader, but she displayed her talents, poise and confidence against her peers who have more experience than she does. As a seventh grader for coach Gregory Bauldrick's 5A Division 2 Westwood team, Alexander showcased that she is the immediate future for the Redhawks. Alexander averaged 10.5 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.4 steals as a seventh grader for Westwood. Making transition plays, connecting on 3-point attempts, turning defense into offense and combining height with length are among the many positive attributes to a game that one can imagine how it will be developed once she gets more experience under her belt.

This past weekend where orange leather basketballs took up a fair amount of Gray's schedule. The FBC Jungle event on Sunday was a day after Gray was at the North Charleston Recreation Center to take part in the SCBCA Elite Camp. Gray's fearlessness in attacking the rim is a major attribute that has propelled her to varsity status even as she embarks on her eighth grade campaign at 4A A.C. Flora. Another is how she puts more emphasis on rebounding than many more experienced guards. Gray played in 26 contests last season for the Falcons and averaged 6.5 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game.

Robinson was announced as having joined the Legacy Early College program back during the summer. She also spent time on the Adidas circuit with [program_tooltip program_id='713005' first='Upward' last='Stars'] over the spring and summer months of AAU. Robinson stands at 5-foot-5. She can handle the rock with her left hand and knows how to get downhill with the ball. Robinson will locate driving lanes for her to get through defenses and deliver strong finishes at the cup. She also has no problems converting on floaters, will try her hand at 3-pointers and has no problems drawing contact to find her way to the free throw line.

Choice is a multi-sport athlete who also participates in volleyball as a team captain in addition to what she gets done on the basketball court. She is a 2030 who already has a height advantage on her peer eighth-graders as she stands at 5-foot-10. Choice can perform the more conventional of many prospects with her height by making plays close to the basket – including scoring and rebounding. What makes Choice especially dangerous is she can connect from long range and also understands how to get out in transition to make plays. Choice currently attends Beck Academy in the Upstate and has played her travel ball with Team SC.

We at Prep Girls Hoops listed Drummond as one of our notables on the 2030 Watch List for a reason. She primarily plays at the three and places plenty of emphasis on taking care of the ball and limiting turnovers. She can get in position to corral rebounds and showcases plenty of speed and court vision. Ball handling with either her right or her left hand is another bright element of her game – as is the ability to connect from the midrange. Talent has been synonymous in recent years with 5A Division 1 Mauldin and Drummond is showing all of the indications of a talent tailor-made for Mavericks orange and brown.
