Top Girls Basketball Performers in Maryland/DC Metro

<p>The Maryland/DC metro area is home to five nationally ranked girls programs, the top high school conference in the country in the WCAC, and the IAAM not far behind in overall talent. While those leagues draw much of the attention, the overlooked programs are often where the most compelling stories can be found. That was the case on Friday at Wilde Lake, followed by a Saturday afternoon stop at Georgetown Day, where the depth of talent on display continued to reinforce just how strong the region truly is.</p>   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">1/16/25: Reservoir @ Wilde Lake </h2>   <p>Reservoir, ranked No. 66 in the state, was outplayed from the opening tip by Wilde Lake, ranked No. 80, behind the steady and impactful play of [player_tooltip player_id='1230242' first='Maggie' last='Shidle']. Wilde Lake set the tone early and maintained control throughout, dictating the pace on both ends of the floor.</p>   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Wilde Lake: Columbia, MD</h2>    <p class="text-gray-700">Maggie controlled the game with her ability to score at all three levels. In the half-court setting, she consistently created offense by getting to the basket, drawing contact, and finishing through defenders. When given space, she showed confidence and efficiency from beyond the arc, using her height to shoot over closeouts. In transition, she remained poised and unselfish, scanning the floor and making decisions with her teammates in mind while still being a scoring threat.</p>     <p class="text-gray-700">Quinn is a prototypical center with the ability to extend the floor and consistently knock down the three, connecting on four triples Friday night. When operating on the wing, her court vision stands out, as she reads the offense well and delivers timely passes to cutting teammates, often leading directly to scoring opportunities. Defensively, Quinn controlled the glass and showed confidence handling the ball in the open court, using her dribble to initiate the break and keep the tempo moving.</p>     <p class="text-gray-700">Trinity is a young player with significant upside. She has the skill set to operate as a secondary point guard, but she is most comfortable on the wing, where she creates space for her pull-up or steps behind the arc and converts from deep. A shifty lefty, she embraces competition and plays with confidence. Defensively, her length creates matchup problems, allowing her to effectively guard positions one through three in the open court.</p>    <h2 class="wp-block-heading">1/17/25: Holy Cross @ Georgetown Day</h2>   <p>Georgetown Day, ranked No. 10 in D.C., pushed Holy Cross, ranked No. 43 in Maryland, to double overtime before Holy Cross ultimately emerged with the win. [player_tooltip player_id='985908' first='Jozi' last='McDuffie'] delivered a standout performance, leading all scorers with a career-high 43 points.</p>   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Georgetown Day: Washington, DC</h2>    <p class="text-gray-700">Jozi can do just about everything on the basketball floor, as was evident in her 43-point performance. When pressured in the open court, she remained composed, using a variety of moves to get past defenders and either finish at the rim or find open teammates on the wing. Away from the ball, she was equally effective, knocking down shots from beyond the arc and attacking off the dribble when defenders overplayed. Jozi is poised to remain among the top two players in her class and continue her rise as a household name, given her consistent production and all-around impact on the game.</p>     <p class="text-gray-700">Eden's leadership by example was evident on the defensive end, where she played a key role in keeping the Mighty Hoppers competitive. On Saturday, she forced five on-ball turnovers with her stifling pressure, while also disrupting passing lanes off the ball to create breakups and ignite the break. Offensively, she operates as a true point guard, managing the offense with poise while using a quick hesitation and change of speed to get to the basket when the opportunity presents itself.</p>     <p class="text-gray-700">Liya has the versatility to play and guard positions one through four, bringing a high basketball IQ and consistent effort on every possession. Defensively, she was routinely in the right position, whether securing rebounds, providing help defense, or winning loose-ball situations. Offensively, her combination of size and skill allows her to operate effectively in multiple roles and score at all three levels. When matched up with smaller guards, her frame creates a clear advantage, while against bigger defenders, her quickness allows her to gain separation.</p>    <h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Academy of Holy Cross: Kensington, MD</h2>    <p class="text-gray-700">Rachel's presence in the paint was a matchup nightmare early on, as she consistently scored with her back to the basket using strong post moves and also showed her ability to face up from the elbow, handling the ball confidently in traffic. She finished with 39 points, shooting 42% from the field.</p>     <p class="text-gray-700">Jaylen's game is quiet and can be easily overlooked by the casual fan, but she still made a strong impact with 19 points, including six from the free throw line. Her six-foot frame gives her the versatility to play positions two through five. With her ball-handling ability, she also provides Holy Cross with a reliable third guard option in press-break situations.</p>
