The Defensive Battle of the 3A State Championship

The Class 3A state championship at UNF turned into exactly the kind of game you expect when two disciplined teams meet with a title on the line — physical, defensive, and played at a deliberate pace. From the opening minutes, Somerset Canyons set the tone and never looked back, leading from start to finish and never trailing throughout the contest. In a low-scoring battle where every possession carried extra weight, rebounding and second-chance opportunities became a major difference maker, helping Somerset maintain control of the game.   Somerset jumped out early and established its presence on both ends to begin both halves, dictating tempo and forcing the game into a slower grind. The third quarter provided the game's best offensive stretch, but once the fourth quarter arrived, the pace slowed to a crawl as Somerset focused on protecting the lead and managing possessions. Offensively, Lake Highland Prep struggled to ever find a consistent rhythm, while Somerset created cleaner looks by moving the ball effectively. The Cougars finished with 10 assists on 17 made field goals, a sign of the patience and shot creation that separated them on the offensive end.   Leading the way were Pinnock and Doty, who combined for 28 of Somerset's 44 points and provided the timely scoring needed in a defensive battle. When the final buzzer sounded, Somerset Canyons had secured a historic milestone — the program's first-ever girls basketball state championship.    Alana delivered a championship-level performance for Somerset Canyons, finishing with a game-high 15 points and 9 rebounds while adding 3 steals and 2 assists. Her impact was felt across the entire stat sheet and on both ends of the floor. Alana's smooth step-back jumper created separation when her team needed a bucket, and her length and athleticism made her extremely difficult to contain when attacking the rim. Defensively, she disrupted passing lanes and made plays with her activity and reach. Despite drawing significant defensive attention as the primary offensive engine, she still found ways to produce and ultimately helped lead Somerset Canyons to its first-ever state championship.     Delanie played a key role in the championship win for Somerset, finishing with 13 points and 4 rebounds on efficient shooting. She went 5-for-9 from the field and knocked down 3 of her 7 attempts from beyond the arc, hitting several timely shots that helped maintain Somerset's control of the game. Her ability to space the floor forced the defense of Lake Highland Prep to extend, preventing them from collapsing too heavily on Alana and opening up the offense. Delanie's shooting mechanics were impressive all game — a smooth stroke, clean form, and consistent rotation, even when shooting on the move. Her perimeter scoring and floor spacing were a major reason Somerset was able to secure the state championship.     Dylande used her size and athleticism to make a strong impact inside for the Cougars. She finished with 8 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 block while consistently battling on the glass and drawing fouls in the paint. Her length and explosiveness allowed her to protect the rim and alter shots defensively, helping Somerset control the interior throughout the game. Dylande's presence around the basket and her physical play were key pieces in the Somerset's championship effort. After being an important contributor all season, the senior closes out her high school career the best way possible — with a win and a state championship ring.     Myanna was the most efficient offensive player for Lake Highland Prep, knocking down all three of their made three-pointers. She finished with 13 points on 4-for-9 shooting from the field and 3-for-6 from deep. Myanna's scoring and ability to create shots kept LHP within striking distance and provided the team's spark on offense throughout the game.     Saleigh contributed a strong all-around effort for LHP, finishing with 8 points and 5 rebounds. She battled on the glass on both ends of the floor and provided a solid interior presence with her strength and athleticism. Her physical play helped the Highlanders stay competitive in the paint throughout the game.     A'Niyah made an impressive showing in the state title game for Lake Highland Prep as a freshman. She finished with 7 points on 3-for-4 shooting from the field and added 2 rebounds. Her efficient scoring and composure on the big stage highlighted her potential for the future.
