Illinois Sophomore ID Camp: standout performances

This year's Illinois Sophomore ID camp saw dozens of the best 10th-graders in the state, competing under one roof. These players already have a year of high school under their belts, and are continuing the grind to get attention from schools at the next level. In this article, we'll revisit some of the top performers from Sunday's event.    Isabel put on a scoring clinic on Sunday. She was making shots from all three levels, but her 3-point shooting might have been most impressive. Isabel connected on at least two 3-pointers in each of the three games she played on Sunday. And scored in double figures in two of her games.   Isabel knows how to take a heat check. She scored 8 straight points in her final game of the day, and she never passed up the chance at a deep ball. But she can do it at all 3 levels. She goes hard to the cup, and can make a contested layup. And no matter where she is on the floor, she shoots the ball with supreme confidence.   Isabel prides herself on finding her shot, as well as spotting open teammates.     Katara was one of the most impressive players I watched all day on Sunday. She has impressive length, and fights hard in the lane for rebounds and putbacks.   Katara is a dangerous defender. She can rip the ball away from you if you're trying to corral a rebound. And she has the reach to deflect passes and come up with some huge blocks.   Katara put on an impressive scoring display in her first game of the day, dropping at least 12 points on her opposition. She has a quick trigger and can pull up for a contested 3-pointer. But she also possesses a nice midrange game, and can beat you with a dribble-drive.   With her size and toughness, Katara will be a serious contender as one of Illinois' best up-and-comers in the class of 2029.     Lily had an impressive showing on Sunday, scoring 8 points in her team's second game of the day. And even without the ball in her hands, Lily finds a way to make a difference.   Lily doesn't have the size of some of her opponents, but she makes up for it with toughness and tenacity. She fights for boards, and will scrap with anyone on the floor.   Lily has a solid midrange game, and can make shots all around the horn. And her handles are off the charts. She has great control on a fast break, and is able to keep her handle when she's attempting to make a layup.     Aubrey Timmerman has great hustle, and looks like a player with a strong basketball IQ.   She has a great first step, and is able to pass the ball out of pressure when she gets double-teamed. But her scoring abilities seem to come natural to her. She has a nice float game, with a midrange touch. And when she's battling down low, she can finish with confidence.   Aubry scored 11 points in one game, but she's really strong on defense as well; never giving up on a play-at one point chasing down a breakaway layup attempt and getting a block.     Natalie had an outstanding showing at Sunday's event, looking at times like one of the best post players on the court. But also showing that her skillset isn't limited to playing in the paint.   Natalie is incredibly tough down low. She can make a basket under heavy pressure, and she is going to pile up a ton of rebounds in her prep career. She always seems to find a way to get in position for a board.   But Natalie can step outside and drop a 3-pointer when you're least expecting it. She's dangerous at every spot on the floor, and even showed off her clutch gene; delivering the game-winning shot at the buzzer in one of her team's wins.   Natalie is a challenging matchup on both ends of the court, and will be a double-double factory in high school ball.     Caygan was on fire to begin her Sunday showing, and was consistently one of the top players on the floor. She made three 3-pointers in just the first half of her first game, and followed that with an 8-point showing in her second game.   Caygan has a knack for shaking her defender, and she is an absolute whirlwind when she has the ball in her hands. So hard to defend and keep in check; her court vision is already off the charts.   Caygan is tough down low, with an ability to track down rebounds and dump in putback attempts. And she's a total grinder on defense. She's unbothered if she has to guard someone who's taller than her, and is tenacious when she's marked up against the ballhandler.   Caygan has a vast skillset, but is also unselfish. She's willing to make an extra pass when she needs to. And can always find a lane to the hoop.
