While scoring often gets much of the attention at showcase events, there is plenty to appreciate about players who make things happen on the defensive end. At the Headliners Invitational, several players showed their ability to disrupt opposing offenses through on-ball pressure, anticipation and active hands. Whether they were jumping passing lanes, challenging shots or creating turnovers that led to transition opportunities, these players found ways to make their presence felt without needing the basketball in their hands. Here are five players from Team Liberty and Team Fever who caught my attention with their defensive efforts throughout the event.

Savannah made life difficult for opposing ball handlers at the Headliners Invitational with her pesky on-ball defense. She stayed engaged with her matchup and applied pressure, forcing opponents to work to create space and get into their offense. One of the plays that really caught my attention was her block on the perimeter. It's not every day you see a defender time a contest well enough to block a shot away from the basket, but Savannah showed she was willing to challenge shooters. I liked the effort she brought to individual defensive matchups and her ability to make opponents uncomfortable when handling the basketball. Her defensive pressure and willingness to contest shots were valuable parts of what she brought to Team Liberty.

Sophie showed some excellent defensive instincts at the Headliners Invitational, particularly when it came to anticipating where the basketball was going. She did a nice job reading opposing players and recognizing opportunities to jump passing lanes, coming away with multiple steals throughout the event. What I really liked was that she didn't allow those defensive plays to go to waste. After creating turnovers, Sophie was quick to look up the floor and deliver passes ahead to teammates, helping Team Liberty get into transition before the defense could recover. She also showed good timing when challenging a shot, coming away with a block. Her ability to anticipate passes, create turnovers and immediately help turn those possessions into offensive opportunities made her a difference maker defensively.

Natalie demonstrated how valuable active hands and good anticipation can be on the defensive end at the Headliners Invitational. She consistently looked for opportunities to disrupt the offense, reading passing lanes and getting her hands on the basketball for deflections and steals. I liked that she didn't have to rely on simply guarding the player with the ball to make an impact. Her awareness of what was happening around her allowed her to recognize passes and react quickly. Those deflections and steals helped create additional possessions for Team Fever while making it more difficult for opponents to move the basketball comfortably. Natalie's defensive awareness and ability to anticipate plays were some of the strongest parts of her performance.

Heidi showed some encouraging defensive skills while competing with Team Fever at the Headliners Invitational. One of the things I liked about her performance was the activity she brought with her hands when defending opposing players. She made an effort to disrupt ball handlers and challenge their ability to operate comfortably with the basketball. While Heidi also showed some nice offensive skills throughout the event, including her perimeter shooting and passing, her defensive contributions were another positive part of her game. Having players who are willing to stay involved defensively and make things difficult for their opponents is important, and Heidi demonstrated that she could contribute on that end of the floor.

Tayla showed good defensive awareness at the Headliners Invitational, particularly with her ability to recognize an opportunity to jump a passing lane. On one possession, she anticipated the pass, came away with a steal and immediately looked to push the basketball ahead. Rather than trying to do everything herself, she delivered a nice pass in transition to help create an offensive opportunity for Team Liberty. I liked the decision-making she showed following the turnover, as she quickly recognized how to take advantage of the defense being out of position. Tayla also contributed on the glass, showing a willingness to compete for rebounds and help her team secure possessions. Her ability to read the floor, create a turnover and turn that defensive play into a scoring opportunity was a nice example of how she could impact the game beyond her shooting ability.
