Bishop Ireton is a perennial powerhouse in the WCAC and was, without question, the top-performing girls team at the Governor's Challenge this past weekend. The Cardinals are capable of scoring at all three levels and from every position on the floor, but their greatest strength remains their backcourt.

I was in attendance for their 11/29 matchup against McDonough, a game that was competitive early as expected. The first half was tightly contested, with Bishop Ireton holding a slim 17–15 advantage at the break. The turning point came in the third quarter, when the Cardinals' backcourt asserted control, led by Mackenzie, shifting the momentum decisively. From there, Bishop Ireton separated and never looked back, closing out a convincing 54–37 victory.

Londyn possesses a quick first step that consistently allows her to get into the middle of the paint with ease. Once there, her floor awareness and shifty footwork enable her to reach the rim before the defense can recover. On the defensive end, she was at her best, playing with constant effort and pressure, never taking a possession off and staying in her opponent's space throughout the game.

Aaliyah has a smooth, composed game on both ends of the floor. Her combination of height and ball-handling ability allows her to function effectively as a combo guard. She showed flashes of getting to the basket and scoring creatively, but her defensive impact stood out the most. Aaliyah is capable of guarding positions one through four in the open court with ease, and in the half court her length makes her especially disruptive, as she consistently takes away space and passing lanes.

Kamiera is a player who consistently impacts the game without needing the ball on either end of the floor. Defensively, she was tasked throughout the game with guarding the opponent's top offensive threat, showcasing her ability to defend anyone in the open court. Her defensive pressure frequently ignited transition opportunities for Bishop Ireton and for herself. Kamiera quietly finished with 14 points, shooting 66 percent from the field and a perfect 100 percent from beyond the arc, production that was largely fueled by the problems she created on the defensive end.

Kai is another player for Bishop Ireton who does not need to score at a high volume to earn her minutes. Her size and defensive balance allow her to guard multiple positions in the open court, providing consistent value on that end of the floor. While on the court, Kai posted a +9 point differential for the Cardinals and was efficient at the free-throw line, converting 75 percent of her attempts.

It was only a matter of time before Mackenzie (aka Blue) took over, as she is fully capable of doing. An emotional, confident player, she can create in the open court going downhill and operate effectively in the half-court. Mackenzie controlled the third quarter, consistently getting to her spots in the lane where she used her size to finish at the rim or create for others, highlighted by a well-timed no-look pass in traffic. She finished as the Cardinals' leading scorer with 19 points, shooting 7 of 9 from the field and 50 percent from beyond the arc.
