Prep Girls Hoops took in the action his past weekend from Cardinal Newman at the CHNY Showcase. This annual event has always been on the calendar for us here at Prep Girls Hoops. Let's take a look and see from here. What Did We Learn from the event at Cardinal Newman? Head Coach Molly Goodrich has to believe the future looks bright for her squad. [player_tooltip player_id='405365' first='Kailen' last='Parks'], [player_tooltip player_id='560668' first='Evie' last='Godfrey'], [player_tooltip player_id='452367' first='Sydni' last='Anderson'] and sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='560678' first='Jaleya' last='Lytes'] are just a few names here to monitor.

Size No Problem - We Have It:

The Ridge View HS Lady Blazers surely don't lack size down in the paint. [player_tooltip player_id='358292' first='Destiny' last='Drakeford'] a senior post player plays with her back to the basket and really does a nice job of sealing off defenders down low. Destiny runs the floor very well and gets to her spots down on the block to receive the ball. She was able to finish around the basket with a nice spin move today.

Junior post player [player_tooltip player_id='323653' first='Anasia' last='Harvey'] does her best work around the paint area. Harvey can rebound the ball equally well on both sides of the court. She does a nice job of keeping the ball up high after claiming it off the glass.

Sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='268137' first='Simone' last='Johnson'] has the ability to play inside-out on the floor. Johnson can set up camp at times in the corners for some open looks. Simone can knockdown the 3-ball when given the opportunity. Johnson is a good-sized wing player who keeps on getting better for the Lady Blazers.

Can the Lady Vikings be a Contender?

Can the Spring Valley HS Lady Vikings be a contender this year in Class 5A? The Lady Vikings coach by Megan Assey have some solid pieces in place. Unknown seniors Emory Smith, Gabrielle Lemons and Maegan McGriff all bring a strong work ethic to the hardwood. This trio isn't flashy by no means, but they buy in and play hard and understand their roles on the floor.

The Junior Trio of [player_tooltip player_id='268138' first='Zie'l' last='Ratchford'], [player_tooltip player_id='320740' first='Lauren' last='Crosland'] and [player_tooltip player_id='651707' first='Mariana' last='Moody'] will makes things go here for the Lady Vikings. Add in freshman point guard Kallie Robertson to the mix from out top. The Lady Vikings will surprise some teams at the end of the day.

Diamond Hornets Duo:

The Lower Richland HS Diamond Hornets suffered a tough loss to Lexington HS here today. The Diamond Hornets got strong play from forward [player_tooltip player_id='405364' first='Jhnai' last='Sumter']. Sumter who finished with 18 points was able to connect from the short corner or simply finish around the rim. Jhnai really used a nice little left-handed jump-hook to finish on a few occasions. [player_tooltip player_id='496217' first='Chi'nya' last='Isaac'] brings the willingness to score the ball from the backcourt. Isaac can attack the cup or simply drop the bounce pass to one of her teammates. She finished with 12 points in the loss to Lexington HS. This duo still has a few more years to make some noise for the Diamond Hornets.

SCISA Players:

[player_tooltip player_id='185222' first='Samira' last='Khalil'] certainly is not a new name on the SCISA level for the Hammond Lady Skyhawks. Khalil ranked #5 in the least 2024 Palmetto State Class is headed off to Elon University after her high school career.

Senior [player_tooltip player_id='356921' first='Kayce' last='Hyman'] can play both forward positions for the Hammond Lady Skyhawks. The left-handed Hyman plays aggressive on both sides of the court and at times can get the ball downhill to the cup.

[player_tooltip player_id='257992' first='Teonna' last='Draughn'] is a new name in the Midlands and at Cardinal Newman this coming season. Draughn first saw action as a 7th grader at Hemingway HS down in Williamsburg County. Teonna now a sophomore will look to be the future of Lady Cardinals basketball at Cardinal Newman for Head Coach Coral Johnson.
