For both years that there was a 5A Division 2 classification, Berkeley was the team to beat. Carter was at the nucleus of two of coach Crystal Peace’s Stags teams that claimed state championship. Back in early March, Berkeley defended its 5A Division 2 crown against a tough out in Greenville and she willed her team to victory to the tune of a 29-point outburst. A few weeks after the Stags repeated as state champions, Carter was rewarded with an offer from Minnesota North College. She averaged 13.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.9 steals in the 28 games that she played.

Berkeley’s defense of its 5A Division 2 state crown began in inauspicious fashion with a loss to SCISA 4A runner-up First Baptist the Tuesday prior to She Got Next. Carter helped to right the ship for the Stags as she scored 18 points in a 70-54 victory for Berkeley over 4A Beaufort. Carter approaches the game with a heads-up attitude, enabling her to react quickly on any play. She will run back to the offensive side of the floor as soon as a teammate corrals a defensive rebound. Carter can display accuracy from behind the arc and displays on-court leadership skills which not every sophomore showcases. Two word that come to mind when watching Carter are floor and general.

If 5A Berkeley was not on the radars of South Carolina high school basketball fans prior to this season, they certainly are now in large part because of Carter’s stellar play for the Stags. Coaches will give plenty of playing time to those who do the little things that do not show up on a stat sheet – such as hustling for loose balls. Carter does plenty of that. The ability to drain 3-pointers, get out in transition and collect steals are other strong points to her gamt that is continuing to develop in the right direction. Carter is a key element of Berkeley’s young nucleus that should continue to yield plenty of positive fortunes for the Stags in the coming seasons.
