About Celia

How would you briefly describe your gameplay style?

I feel like I play my best in fast paced games. When you’re just out there playing! Limited time to think and moving quickly into the next play.Making good quick decisions and outplaying and out hustling your opponents.I like that style. However,I also know there’s a time to slow it down and be very strategic.I like outsmarting defenders, especially those that are more experienced.

Can you provide a brief description of your mentality or personality?

I work hard, and not just with my team, but on my own. I work hard physically doing cardio and strength training. I also work on my basketball fundamentals outside of practice. What’s harder than the physical work? The mental work! It can be a challenge to reset after a mistake and to stay positive sometimes. I’m constantly working mentally to improve and overcome adversity in the game.

Are you involved in any clubs, organizations, or have you received any non-sport awards?

I participate in service club at school where we provide service hours for our school and community.

What skills or qualities have you developed, such as leadership, teamwork, or community service?

I think one of the best things a leader can do is stay positive. I’m continually empowering my teammates to keep a positive mental focus. Phrases like “next play” “shake it off” can really help you get past that missed shot, bad pass, or stolen ball. I also believe it’s important to participate in activities with my team other than basketball. Having fun together on and off the court.

Have you faced any significant challenges? If so, please describe.

For me, my biggest challenge was being the only freshman on varsity last year. It was mentally and physically challenging. I wasn’t as strong in either category. I was taking someone’s spot and had to earn respect. Earning respect is hard, and being an underclassman didn’t help. It definitely made me work harder , hitting the weights all summer and practicing

What type of college are you looking for?

I’m not sure yet. Just going into my sophomore year and I’m leaving all my options open.

Scherr is averaging about 11 points and six rebounds a game as a sophomore. She ranks second among Golden Eagles in both of those statistical categories. Scherr held up well against a veteran Iowa City High team in mid-January, flashing multi-level scoring ability. She stood out for toughness around the rim and an ability to finish with either hand. Scherr flashes a nice pull-up game and is explosive off of the bounce. A good athlete, the 10th-grader moves well laterally and quick hands help her defend well on the ball.
