About Somaya
Expert Analysis
Tink Butler | Prep Girls Hoops Scout
Somaya flirted with MVP honors, picking up some early votes with the way she was making plays on both ends of the floor. She knocked down shots from beyond the arc and showed a high motor by following her own misses for putbacks. Playing with the 2029 team against the 2028s, she finished with 12 points and never seemed bothered by the older competition. Somaya played with a lot of energy, and several of her best plays came simply from her effort and willingness to stay involved in the action. She brought the type of activity that was hard to overlook.

Davis knows how to create and capitalize on scoring opportunities, especially on the perimeter. She moved well without the ball to find open space, knocked down multiple threes from different spots on the floor, and mixed in a mid-range jumper while also crashing weakside for a putback. She understands how to relocate, stay shot-ready, and make defenses lose track of her.

Somaya shot the ball extremely well and displayed deep range, confidently knocking down shots from well beyond the three-point arc. She was effective when her feet were set and space was available, but what really stood out was her ability to connect on contested attempts with a defender closing out. Somaya showed confidence in her shot, a consistent release, and the ability to get the ball off without needing a lot of room. Her range forced defenders to extend well beyond the arc, creating additional spacing and opening driving lanes for her teammates. Whether left open or shooting with a hand in her face, she proved to be a dangerous perimeter threat who could change the complexion of a game in a hurry.

Davis created offense by moving well without the ball and recognizing space along the perimeter. She showed confidence with her catch-and-shoot, quickly stepping into multiple three-pointers while staying ready for every pass. In transition, she sprinted the floor with purpose, maintaining proper spacing before cutting to the basket and creating easy scoring opportunities.

For a guard Somaya rebounds and finds ways to score inside. She has quick hands on defense and a good reaction time. She uses her body well to protect the ball which limits her turnovers. I didn’t get to see her shooting range but her for dictates that she should be effective from beyond the arc giving her versatility at each perimeter position.

Somaya is shooting guard with good upper body strength and a scorer’s mentality who puts constant pressure on the defense due to her being in constant attack mode. She has great form on her shot and a short memory, so if she’s in a cold spell she will keep attacking. She made some big 3 point shots to swing momentum in her team’s direction as they went 3-1 on the weekend. She goes to the basket aggressively and crashes the boards well for a guard.
