As the season draws nearer we'd like to take a look at five of the top point guards in Maryland to keep an eye on this season. Floor generals, true leaders, these are the players that make others better and are the key to the success of the team.
<span style="text-decoration: underline;color: #800000"><strong>Yonta Vaughn - 5'8" - Bishop McNamara 2022</strong></span>
[caption id="attachment_30217" align="alignnone" width="300"] Yonta Vaughn[/caption]
Yonta is one of the purest point guards in the area. She looks to pass first and run the teams offense. She is a great on ball defender and has been playing at the highest possible level since starting her high school career. She doesn't look to score much as she is typically running a team of scorers but, she is very efficient shooting over 80% from the field and she is deadly accurate from beyond the arc. Her biggest asset at the point is that she rarely turns the ball over which limits the Mustangs empty possessions.
<span style="text-decoration: underline;color: #800000"><strong>Kaylah Ivey - 5'8" - Riverdale Baptist - 2020</strong></span>
[caption id="attachment_17977" align="alignnone" width="300"] Kaylah Ivey[/caption]
Kaylah has been playing at another level during the summer and in fall league. Riverdale Baptist is deep and talented this season and will look to make a statement as a national top 25 team. The Boston College commit has great vision and pushes the ball well in transition. She has to always be accounted for on the floor because of her ability to knock down open shots. If the Crusaders are to make a serious statement this season Kayla will be the key.
<span style="text-decoration: underline;color: #800000"><strong>Jada Walker - 5'7" - New Hope Academy - 2021</strong></span>
[caption id="attachment_19716" align="alignnone" width="300"] Jada Walker[/caption]
Jada has the ability to shift her game into another gear. She leaves it all on the floor whether its a national championship game or a scrimmage. She attacks the basket really well and has the ability to finish at some of the most unusual angles. She shoots the ball well from the midrange and is a threat from beyond the arc. She gets her teammates involved in the game but, understand that she can put the team on her shoulders and carry the load when she needs to.
<span style="text-decoration: underline;color: #800000"><strong>Vashe' Rideout - 5'7" - Pallotti - 2021</strong></span>
[caption id="attachment_20956" align="alignnone" width="300"] Vashe' Rideout[/caption]
Vashe' is very good at driving and dishing. She keeps her head up when pressured, enabling her to see who is open on the floor and find her driving lanes. She is strong enough to absorb contact and finish afterwards. She has a knack of getting to the line where she's a very good free throw shooter. She has transferred from Western to Pallotti where she should get big minutes.
<span style="text-decoration: underline;color: #800000"><strong>Nyceara Pryor - 5'3" - Western - 2022</strong></span>
[caption id="attachment_20953" align="alignnone" width="300"] Nyceara Pryor[/caption]
Nyceara is one of the quickest guards in the area. She is fast end to end and shifty with the ball making her very hard to stay in front of. She is a good finisher and at 5'3 she finds great angles to finish over taller defenders. The Dove's are hard to trap with her decision making at the point.
