The last piece of our series on Colorado’s top scoring freshmen from this past CHSAA season is 3A. If you missed the rest of our 2024 Standout articles, check out 1A, 2A, 4A, and 5A.
Mackenzie Flikkema Mackenzie Flikkema 5'10" | CG Resurrection Christian | 2024 State CO – Resurrection Christian – 13.3 PPG
- With the arrival of Flikkema, the Cougars had a nice jump from a 12-11 record in 2020 to 11-5 this year, highlighted by a six game winning streak before their playoff loss to Lutheran. They only graduate about four points per game so look for the Cougars to keep improving. Flikkema was the team’s third leading rebounder with 6.4 RPG and made her team better with more steals (2.1 SPG) than she had turnovers (1.3 TPG).
Maeve Salveson Maeve Salveson 5'6" | CG St. Mary's | 2024 State CO – St. Mary’s – 12.1 PPG
- Salveson had a sharpshooting freshman season hitting the 5th most threes in all of 3A. She’s the most confident shooter on this list, hitting 34% of her threes. The Pirates are in for yet another dominant season returning their big three in Salveson, Ellie Hartman Ellie Hartman 5'6" | CG St. Mary's | 2022 State CO (2022, 5’6″, 19.8 PPG), and Payton Kutz (2022, 5’4″, 13.4 PPG).
Jaycee Pittman – Grand Valley – 11.8 PPG
- The Cardinals weren’t quite the dominant team they were in recent years but they showed off some young talent on their way to a 9-7 season. They were led by 2023 riser, Abbey Parker (5’4″, 15.1 PPG), and 2024 multisport standout, Pittman (5’8″).
Karen Alvarez – Arrupe Jesuit – 11.0 PPG
- Alvarez didn’t wait around to make her splash in the 3A scene. She scored 25 points in her very first high school game and went on to lead the Generals in scoring.
Alex May – Colorado Academy – 8.8 PPG
- The Mustangs have to be optimistic for the coming season after a strong 7-3 season this year. Yes, they graduate their anchor in Ella Freimuth (6’2″, 13.5 PPG), but Colorado Academy had three freshmen contribute on a team that played St. Mary’s pretty tough in the playoffs. The 5’10” May led that group and will look to fill the void left by Freimuth. May grabbed 9.0 rebounds per game.
Taylor Berkheimer – Highland – 8.4 PPG
- Another young team is the Highland Huskies, coming off a 9-5 season in which they were led by a sophomore ( Jenna Batka Jenna Batka 5'8" | CG Highland | 2023 State CO , 5’8″, 17.1 PPG) and two freshmen. Berkheimer got hot late in the season, hitting 32% of her threes in the Huskies’ last four games.
Jonae Harris – Englewood – 8.0 PPG
- Englewood rode the scoring of two freshmen to a 6-7 season. Harris led the team in both scoring and also had a huge rebounding year, pulling in 10.8 per game.
Naomi Wolff – Colorado Academy – 6.9 PPG
- Another highlight of the Mustangs’ season is their leader in assists was just a freshman. Wolff scored 6.9 a game of her own but led the team with 2.7 assists per game. The 5’5″ guard also grabbed 2.4 steals each game.
Jaliyah Mora – Englewood – 6.7 PPG
- The Pirates’ second standout freshman is a 5’4″ point guard who’s not afraid to shoot. Mora hit double digit scoring three times, hit multiple threes in a game three times, and had an eight steal, six rebound performance against Conifer.
Nikki McSpadden – Lutheran – 6.4 PPG
- McSpadden found a nice role on one of the state’s top teams. She had an efficient season with 108 points on 101 shots, nailing 31% of her threes and 75% of her free throws. She earned more court time as the season went on and averaged 9.7 PPG in the Lions’ final six games.
Steph Bingley – Highland – 5.7 PPG
- While Berkheimer stood out offensively for the Huskies, Bingley made her impact on the defensive end. She contributed 4.1 rebounds and 2.6 steals a game and went on a tear with thirteen points, seven boards, seven steals, and seven assists in a win over Lyons.
Audrey Johnson – Buena Vista – 5.6 PPG
- The Demons have a guard to watch in the 5’8″ Johnson. I saw her play recently at Gold Crown and she can drive with confidence like an upperclassman with both hands. Her range is developing and I bet she’ll be a strong outside shooter by the coming season. Johnson scored double figures two times for the Demons.
