Season Preview: Class 1A Preseason Awards

Now that I’ve spent this past week previewing each of the 16 Sectionals in Class 1A, I wanted to take a look at who I think could be the better individuals in Indiana throughout the 2022-2023 season. Taking some ideas from college preview magazines, below I’ve assembled a variety of preseason awards, preseason all-state teams, plus a preseason honorable mention section. I’ve given past years’ performances some consideration, but the players below are listed based specifically on how I think they will perform this season.

TOP CLASS 1A PRESEASON AWARDS
These preseason awards are an attempt at honoring girls who I think stand out in Class 1A. Typically, there are multiple candidates for each award, and every award can be easily debatable, but I chose the individuals below based on who I thought filled the description the best. Each award is determined through different criteria, as some awards are based primarily on opinion, while others are decided with a heavy influence from statistical merit.

Most Valuable Player: Allison Capouch Allison Capouch 5'11" | SF Kouts | 2023 State IN , 2023, 5-11 SF, Kouts H.S.
– The meaning of most valuable player to me leans more towards the idea of if you removed this player from their team, how would their team continue to perform. I chose Allison, because I feel like Kouts will be a top team in Class 1A, and yes, there are some other nice pieces on their roster, but the statistical output she produces, in addition to the amount of attention she draws from opposing defenses, are hard to find from most other players. She will be their go-to again this season, whether she is knocking down jumpers with range or posting smaller defenders on the low-block. She will absolutely be one of the toughest matchups in Class 1A.

Most Outstanding Player: Bailey Tabeling Bailey Tabeling 5'10" | SG Trinity Lutheran | 2023 State IN , 2023, 5-10 SG, Trinity Lutheran H.S.
– As opposed to the most valuable player award, the most outstanding award points at simply the best basketball player in all of Class 1A, regardless of team quality, depth etc. Now, Trinity Lutheran is a good team, and Bailey is a big part of that, so the ideas aren’t always mutually exclusive in this case. Bailey is also one of the best basketball players in the state. At #24 in our 2023 rankings, she is the highest ranked 2023 prospect in Class 1A, and she is already committed to Division-I Ohio University. She is long, fluid, and smooth, she can handle it and create offense, she’s a very good shooter with range, and she knows how to take over games.

Most Outstanding Freshman: Maya Layton Maya Layton 5'8" | PG Lafayette Jefferson | 2026 State IN , 2026, 5-7 PG, Faith Christian H.S.
– This is as speculative of an award as there is, because Freshmen haven’t played a high school game yet, and there are surely one or two more in Class 1A I am not familiar with who will impact their teams at a high level. However, based on the rookies I know at this time, I feel like Maya has the best chance at being the most impactful 2026 prospect in Class 1A this year. She stands out in warm-ups with her length, speed, quickness, and all-around athleticism. She has a dynamic handle, a creative mind, and she can make plays on the offensive end, while also creating havoc at the defensive end. She will be an instant game-changer for Faith Christian.

CLASS 1A PRESEASON ALL-STATE TEAMS
Like the preseason awards, this was another attempt to honor girls who could stand out in Class 1A during the 2022-2023 season. These teams were selected based on equal parts talent, skill, potential, statistical accomplishments, and team accomplishments. While we can debate who should be where, I do think it’s at least easy to understand why each of the players listed below were selected to be honored. Disclaimer: Freshmen were not considered for the All-State teams, only Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors, however I have highlighted a few in the Honorable Mention section.
