It feels as if it was yesterday when we were tipping off the first games of the 2022-23 high school girls basketball season across South Carolina. Only a few weeks remain in the regular season, then it will be tournament time across the Palmetto State.

The level of play among the state's 4A competitors has been very high, but a few of those teams has set themselves head and shoulders above the pack.

We unveiled our first list of 4A rankings at the beginning of the month. Without further adieu, here is our updated top 10 list for Class 4A.

South Pointe (19-1, 4-0)

The Stallions have been one of the big stories this season in Palmetto State high school sports as they began the season 19-for-19 before being placed in the loss column recently by the 3A juggernaut that is Camden.

South Pointe's January has included wins over Rock Hill, Catawba Ridge, Lancaster and Westside.

One cannot establish the mark the Stallions have indeed established sans a stacked roster. South Pointe certainly has that – and it includes junior [player_tooltip player_id='199696' first='Victoria' last='Morris'] – and her 14 points, 9.2 rebounds and 3.1 steals she has averaged. [player_tooltip player_id='256646' first='Zaria' last='Bell'] has played in 17 games this season and has solidified the Stallions' frontcourt averaging 13.6 points and 6.7 rebounds a game. [player_tooltip player_id='318084' first='Carrigan' last='McCloud'] has been a worthwhile addition from Indian Land. She has averaged 10.7 points, 7.1 rebounds, 4.7 assists and three steals per game. Seventh grader [player_tooltip player_id='429828' first='Kaleigh' last='Lucas'] represents the future of the South Pointe program. She is averaging nine points and three steals in 18 games. In 16 games, [player_tooltip player_id='577619' first='Jayda' last='Givens'] has averaged 7.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.6 steals. Jatiyah Shannon, who also plays volleyball, has averaged 6.2 points and 6.1 rebounds in 19 games.

North Augusta (17-2, 4-0)

The perennial power that is North Augusta has once again resembled a perennial power in 2022-23. Coach Al Young's Yellow Jackets remain unchanged from where they were in our rankings earlier in the month.

The team's January has included a 20-point victory over a region rival in Aiken on the road on Jan. 10.

[player_tooltip player_id='350281' first='Celena' last='Grant'] is emerging as the future of the North Augusta program. Grant, who has an offer from South Carolina, has averaged 12.7 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game. [player_tooltip player_id='558750' first='Jadah' last='O'Bryant'], a 2023, has delivered numbers of 9.6 points and 2.5 steals per game. Another senior, [player_tooltip player_id='558751' first='Ansley' last='Gartrell'] has has averaged 8.1 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.8 steals per game. Eighth grader [player_tooltip player_id='444371' first='Ashley' last='Walker'] also is a face of the Yellow Jackets' future. She is averaging 7.4 points and 6.5 rebounds along with 1.4 steals. [player_tooltip player_id='577618' first='Kenedi' last='Wright'] has also averaged 7.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.9 steals. [player_tooltip player_id='172178' first='Peris' last='Smith'], a Campbell commit, has only played in seven games this season and averaged 8.9 rebounds, 6.9 points and 1.6 steals.

Last season, the Redhawks nearly scored a victory in the 4A tournament against eventual 4A champion Westside. Westwood once again looks like one of the teams to beat in its classification in 2022-23.

The Redhawks' January has included a win over 5A Blythewood as well as victories over two region foes in A.C. Flora and Ridge View.

Campbell commit [player_tooltip player_id='124105' first='Jessica' last='Woods'] is the team's leading point-getter through 20 games. She has averaged 12.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.3 steals per game. [player_tooltip player_id='198126' first='Korletta' last='Daniels'] is also a senior (as is Woods) and she is averaging 11.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.3 steals a game.

The Warriors put the Palmetto State high school basketball landscape on notice by wining 10 games last season as a 5A participant. Riverside is now a 4A school – and has done more of the same this season.

Riverside's January has included impressive victories over 5A Gaffney and another 4A school in Eastside.

[player_tooltip player_id='371196' first='Kyndal' last='Haroski'] is a name that many a Palmetto State high school basketball fan will have their eyes on in the coming seasons. The Warriors have also received worthwhile contributions from Miah Johnson and [player_tooltip player_id='414178' first='Elly' last='Trickett'] among others.

The Bruins were a Lower State 4A finalist last season. South Florence's 18 victories the team has earned once again has them well-positioned among the upper echelon in 4A play – and it is two wins shy of last season's 20.

South Florence's January has included a win over A.C. Flora during MLK weekend as well as another over North Myrtle Beach at the home court of the Chiefs on Jan. 18. They also defeated an improved Wilson team at home on Jan. 10.

Ever since the middle of November, the Blue Flame has embarked on a 16-game win streak. The momentum Pickens generated from winning its first playoff game in a decade has clearly translated to a great deal of success in 2022-23.

Westside, Greenwood and Easley are among the teams that the Blue Flame has earned wins over in January.

The Copperheads have been a particularly tough out when on their home court. Catawba Ridge has only dropped one game at home and that was during a tournament they hosted in a matchup against North Myrtle Beach.
