They are the desision makers that determine what happens in the game and how they are evaluated. Here’s my thoughts on some of the 2025 classes point guards and how they control their destiny.
When I first saw Caliyah in middle school, I thought that she was immensely talented especially for her age and grade. I felt that she overdribbled and made some plays more difficult than they should be. By her sophomore year in high school I saw that she had matured tremendously and had turned difficult contested layups into easy midrange jumpers. As a junior her IQ and efficiency has matched her skill making her the top prospect in the 2025 class right now in my eyes. She has shown that she can make the adjustment to be successful.
Princess had one of the most impressive freshmen campaigns in the area even playing backup to a couple all-American level point guards. An injury kept her under wraps and coming back she had to get her sea legs back. Princess has to let everyone know she is back to her previous form, that means making herself visible to coaches and making plays with the ball consistently. Also having her people put together a video of her plays wouldn’t hurt as some may have lost track of her which is crazy to say about a top 10 player.
Mary is very skillful with the ball and as a freshman I was a little concerned about her size. As a rising junior her size is not an issue anymore as she had the growth spurt. She also has her skill, can she stand out amongst players of her same talent is what will set her apart. There was a saying that point guards shouldn’t need to be told they are the leader they just fill the role. I’d like to see her take command of the court when she steps on the floor and she can write her own ticket.
Layla will find that moving from PG County public schools to a WCAC team is not the easiest of transitions. If she can navigate the move and show out here she will see that things will start to come easy for her on the next transition to college. Keeping her confidence up playing with and against elite players will allow her to do some of the same things that made her special at Parkdale.
Makyiah lands at her third school and now will have to adjust to not being the go to player every play. With a coach named “Boogie” she will get opportunities to be creative. At DMV Live we saw some of those plays that made her special in public school. If she has to adjust to coming from a double digit scorer to a single digit scorer can she find other ways to make her relevant? It appears se will get the court time to show what she’s got.
Autumn has been flourishing with her shooting, playing under control and making good decisions. She doesn’t try to dominate just does what her team needs and she has been consistent. She’s a top 20 player in the class right now forget rankings and she just needs to stay the course and she will be fine.
