This matchup had everything: post players battling in the paint, guards showing off their handles, excellent defense on both ends, and so much more. The energy in the gym was electric the entire game no matter what the score showed. Mallard Creek came away with the victory, but this matchup is going to be one to watch over the years. Let’s take a look at some of the standouts.
Lili Booker knows how to make plays on both ends of the court blocking shots with quick close outs and making sharp passes to her teammates at the basket. She can take it all the way herself not backing down from contact. She knows how to finesse her way to the rim showing off ball fakes and getting the open look. She showed off her range knocking it down from deep with ease.
Elle Stone’s hands just seem to find the ball on defense using her length and quickness to knock the ball away on the press. She’s persistent getting the ball herself off of rebounds, and she continues to have a nice shot from around the perimeter. She has a way of getting to the basket using her handles making plays off the dribble.
Olivia Robertson was absolutely dominant in the paint protecting the basket and flashing in and out on offense to get the open pass. She had numerous blocks in this game against all kinds of players from guards driving in the paint to tough post players trying to get their open look. She keeps the perfect position on her opponents on both ends knowing how to seal them off and knock the pass away.
Highlights
Jazmeen Stone has a nice stroke from around the perimeter. She executes offensive sets coming off of screens perfectly and staying ready to shoot. She knows the best option hitting her open teammate inside with the pass to bank it off the glass. Her defense was on point, too, executing traps perfectly on the press making it difficult for her opponents to get the ball past half court.
My’Asia Young is always a nuisance on defense hustling back to make plays knocking the ball away from her opponents to stop the fast breaks. On offense, she finds the openings being ready to shoot off the pass. She can get inside working off the dribble or flashes to the block sliding into the gap being ready for the pass.
Boston Bates took over in the first quarter when her team needed a bucket attacking the basket and scoring from the midrange even with hands in her face. She crashed the boards on offense cleaning up the glass and scoring off second chances. She continued to come out attacking in the second half getting the open look from her work without the ball and knocking them down off the dribble.
Mariah Fullenwider showed off her range knocking it down from deep. Her shooting and ball fakes created plays for her teammates as the defense crashed around her and she made the pass around her defenders. She was making plays at critical times bringing some life to her team.
Shanon Hoover was attacking the basket making plays happen right when her team needed them. She used power dribbles to make plays happen in the paint, and she was able to show off some fakes with the ball to create her own space to score. She got inside for rebounds on both ends of the court. She knows how to use what the defense does against them creating the open look for herself, and she was patient allowing them to leave their feet as she made her move.
Morgan Knox already has a high IQ knowing how to find the opening with her cuts and being ready for the pass no matter where she is on the court. Her cuts make the defense have to shift if they even see her flashing in for the pass beforehand. Her on ball defense was exceptional taking on some tough opponents even being the main reason there was a ten second backcourt turnover called.
Lenise Joseph is tough showing off post moves and good footwork to get her some points. She battles for rebounds going up strong to grab them, and she was blocking shots in the paint. She uses her length on defense to deflect passes, too, being disruptive on both ends of the court.
