Saginaw Valley State University (D2) hosted nearly 40 campers from the 2028-2025 graduating classes on August 4th for their second elite camp of the summer. The camp included many ranked prospects who we project will earn an opportunity to play at the next level upon graduation. Coach Pruett and McDonald included a variety of segments to evaluate various skills including finishing moves/footwork, ball screen continuity offense, 3v3, 5v5, and 3 on 2. I appreciated the coach's energy and intentionality during instruction. A clever constraint they included during competitive play was having the campers compete with new teammates: girls they had not played with during the travel or high school season. This idea leveled the playing field to ensure there weren't competitive advantages for those with prior experience competing together while encouraging the girls to make new connections on the court. At the college level, girls join a new team, have new teammates, and play for new coaches at a new home. Low-stakes opportunities for girls to become more comfortable with this reality before college is a great idea. My favorite days in the gym are when the unexpected happens, a supporting actress becomes the lead actress on the court. Here are some of those girls who became the lead performers on the floor alongside a couple of familiar stars at SVSU Elite Camp 2 on Sunday.

Breasia set herself apart at SVSU Elite Camp 2 with her fierce aggressiveness on both ends of the court. She used a hesitation pushout crossover combo move to beat her defender multiple times for layups. Breasia scored a full speed eurostep layup and created separation to score off two, putting her shoulder into a defenders chest. She showed humility to receive instructional feedback, which led to her executing a successful step-through finish. Breasia elevated to block a shot from behind and was an exciting prospect to watch at camp. She will reach her college potential as she continues to develop her efficiency as an outside shooter.

[player_tooltip player_id='901094' first='MaryGrace' last='Luplow'] had me saying "Who's that girl?" at SVSU Team Camp 2. Her height, athletic profile, and skills as a 2027 make her a college prospect with a ton of potential. She showed good footwork and finishing, using both hands during the finishing drills. She elevated way up around the basket, buried a 3 up top, and anticipated a pass in help to secure a steal during 3v3. As she fine tunes her outside shot, MaryGrace will be lethal on the offensive end because of her length and athleticism.

Lexi was one of the most impressive guards in the gym at SVSU Elite Camp 2. During the finishing drills, Lexi effectively scored off two. She had a smooth touch with her left hand on layups and reverses. Lexi used a sick punch step crossover dribble move to score a contested layup, used a quick behind-the-back dribble to score in the paint, and buried a 3 up top. Lexi has good balance and a high release. She will reach her college potential as she shows consistency knocking down shots like she did today.

Abby separated herself as the most dominant forward on the court at SVSU Elite Camp 2 with her ability to score through contact at the rim. Abby blocked a shot and used a sweet high-rip move to score a layup. Abby didn't need to pull the trigger as a shooter because she consistently beat defenders off the dribble at camp. With how effective her footwork and finishing is going left, Abby will become even more dangerous off the bounce if she produces those moves going right as well. Abby had an outstanding day and rightfully earned an offer to continue her academic/athletic career at SVSU!

Brooklyn was a guard at SVSU Team Camp 2 who excelled in a variety of areas. Her most impression moment happened when Brooklyn stuck with a finishing drill patiently until she got it right. It takes humility and confidence to continue failing until you succeed. Brooklyn scored a smooth right handed reverse after a jab step and finished effectively with both hands around the rim. She fired a long lead pass on a rope for the assist in transition and drilled a high-arcing 3 from the wing. Brooklyn closed out quick to deflect a shot and scored a nifty scoop layup after using a crossover. Brooklyn will be tough to stop offensively as she continues to grow her outside game.
