The great thing about high school sports is that plenty of athletes still compete in multiple sports.

As a scout for three different sports working in an era when focusing on one sport happens earlier than ever, I sometimes forget that the athletes I scout are just teenagers, and some have no idea what they want to do this weekend, let alone after high school.

Thanks to an awesome graphics designer at Prep Network I am ready to roll out a new feature series that will focus on multi-sport athletes, including those who may be leaning or have already decided to play a sport in college other than basketball.

I plan to feature this series on not only on Prep Girls Hoops, but also Prep Dig, and Prep Redzone. Once an athlete informs me that they have made a decision on which sport they plan to play in college it does impact their overall ranking on these three sites. However, that does not mean they will be removed from the rankings or no longer be featured.

[player_tooltip player_id='616730' first='Katja' last='Blanchat'], 5'11”, SF, Smoky Valley, ‘25

Blanchat has been ranked by both Prep Girls Hoops and Prep Dig for multiple seasons. I eventually lost track of how many times I asked her that all-important question “Basketball or volleyball?” Her answer became definitive after committing to play volleyball for Southwestern Oklahoma State. She finished her senior season with 515 kills and 60 blocks, but has long been a paint monster on the basketball court.

[player_tooltip player_id='616752' first='Leah' last='Henke'], 5'7”, PG, Bishop Carroll, ‘25

Bishop Carroll's Henke is a point guard who can find open teammates and loves to dish the rock. However, she also loves to kick soccer balls to open teammates and past keepers on the pitch. She has verbally committed to play soccer for Washburn University.

[player_tooltip player_id='822636' first='Reagan' last='Gerety'], 6'0”, PF, Nemaha Central, ‘25

Gerety is one of several Nemaha Central athletes who will suit up for the Thunder's basketball squad next month, but who will be playing volleyball collegiately. She is a space-eating forward who can block shots and clean the glass. On the volleyball court, she is a killing and blocking machine. She has verbally committed to play volleyball for Baker University.

[player_tooltip player_id='621265' first='Sevy' last='Wurtz'], 5'6”, PG/SG, Clifton Clyde ‘26

Wurtz is one of many small school multi-sport athletes on my list of athletes to track down. She is currently ranked No. 77 overall by PGH and No. 191 overall by Prep Dig. She enters her senior season coming off a junior campaign in which she scored 18 points per game. She finished her senior volleyball season with 500 assists and 209 kills. Wurtz was also a state champion at the state track and field meet last season. To my knowledge, she is still an uncommitted athlete.

[player_tooltip player_id='969771' first='Taylor' last='McDonald'], 6'1”, C, Valley Center, ‘26

McDonald completed an impressive volleyball season for the Hornets and recently decided she would play volleyball at the next level. Taylor and her sister Raegan paired up as enforcers at the net for the Hornets and should both be enforcers in the paint for Valley Center this winter. McDonald plans to play college volleyball for Montana State University.
