On Monday, January 20th, Saginaw Valley State University hosted a high school showcase with two games. In game one, Anchor Bay defeated Davison in overtime 58-51 and Frankenmuth bested Saginaw Heritage 39-31 in game two. To honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Cardinals played a clip from his famous “I Have a Dream” speech before each game, which gave all a moment to reflect upon the words of Dr. King. The event was well organized with hot concessions, media coverage, and two competitive matchups. I will be back for a third time next season and I suggest high school teams reach out to SVSU sooner rather than later. Here are a few players from Davison and Anchor Bay who stood out at the MLK Classic.

Karissa started the game with a fury of strong drives to the rim for Anchor Bay. She demonstrated finesse with her footwork around the basket and used her athletic advantage to beat defenders. Karissa led the team with 17 points, scoring a soft floater off two, a high-rip layup off the dribble, an offensive rebound putback, a straightaway 3, and many contested layups. She dished assists and created steals to help the Tars earn a victory at the SVSU MLK Classic.

Julia made an impact as a facilitator, scorer, and defender to help Anchor Bay secure a win at the SVSU MLK Classic. She knocked down pull-up jumpers with balance, hit free throws, burst by defenders to score layups full-speed off the dribble, and turned steals into points. Julia is a shifty guard for the Tars, contributing 9 points and 3 steals in their win.

Ava is an elusive sophomore guard who showed versatility to be excited about at the SVSU MLK Classic. She jumped up to block a shot, secured rebounds, accelerated to score layups with both hands, knocked down a corner jumper, and added a free throw. Her all-around style of play and high effort for Anchor Bay is something I'm excited to see more of during the travel season. Ava chipped in 7 points and 4 rebounds for the Tars.

Autumn played a significant role in the outcome of the game for Anchor Bay at the SVSU MLK Classic. She helped teammates get open by setting effective screens, won the rebounding battle in the paint, and protected the rim by blocking two shots. Autumn powered through contact to score an offensive rebound putback and knocked down a free throw. Her 6 points and 11 rebounds helped the Tars win a thrilling overtime battle.

Averi split defenders with determined drives to the basket, giving Anchor Bay an edge at the SVSU MLK Classic. She drove past defenders early in the game to score two layups, snagged steals, and dished the ball to teammates when the defense converged. She converted both free throws after using a spin dribble to cause a foul and completed an old-fashioned 3-point play after finishing a strong left-handed layup in overtime. Averi scored 12 points and added 4 steals to help the Tars win the game.

Savannah had impressive stretches for Davison at the SVSU MLK Classic, nearly reaching a double-double. Savannah made an accurate overhead entry pass from up top to a cutting teammate for an assist and hustled back in transition to block a shot attempt. She converted multiple layups off two feet in the paint, scored through a foul, and added a soft floater off the glass using a drop step. Savannah scored 13 points, with 9 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 blocks.

Ella worked hard on both ends, made unselfish plays, and helped Davison compete with her well-rounded performance at the SVSU MLK Classic. She continues moving on offense, scoring a layup after making a basket cut. Ella drilled a deep wing 3, finished a left-handed layup in transition, and chased down rebounds. She scanned the court to find open teammates and made crisp passes. Ella scored 7 points with 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

Brooke was an impactful player for Davison at the SVSU MLK Showcase and her aggressiveness stood out on the court. Brooke beat her defender with a quick drive baseline to score a layup, made a great backdoor cut to score another layup, and added two more layups off two feet. She gave the Cardinals an extra possession by batting down an inbounders pass off their body out of bounds. Brooke made good passes to teammates and her 8 points helped the team compete throughout the game.
