The stakes for Wednesday's Regional Finalists couldn't be higher. Each winner would move on to the Quarterfinals and within one win of a Semifinal birth at the Breslin Center. There were a few exciting matchups to pick from, but the uptempo run-and-gun styles of Haslett and Goodrich won me over. Haslett (22-3) defeated Williamston 47-38 to win their District and knocked off a red-hot Chelsea squad 56-53 in overtime in the Regional Semifinal. Goodrich (22-3) beat Powers Catholic 68-52 to take their District and defeated Eaton Rapids 47-22 in the Regional Semifinal.

It was the Goodrich Martians who drew first blood. They jumped out to a 12-0 lead with 4:52 left in the first quarter as [player_tooltip player_id='614704' first='Kayla' last='Hairston'] buried a pair of threes, added a strong and-one layup in transition, and [player_tooltip player_id='614706' first='Tanner' last='Schramm'] converted a layup through contact at the rim. Despite trailing 24-11 after one, Haslett refused to fold. [player_tooltip player_id='773894' first='Kaitlyn' last='Johnson'] led the Vikings with her interior rebounding, scoring, and defense, while [player_tooltip player_id='751132' first='Avery' last='Hannah'] provided the perimeter scoring. Johnson ended the first half with 11 points and Hannah six as the Vikings trailed 32-24 going into the third. From that point on it was a battle of wills as neither team yielded an inch on defense and both sides stepped up to hit big shots. [player_tooltip player_id='614704' first='Kayla' last='Hairston'] hustled to secure an offensive rebound, passed to a teammate, then drifted to the corner to catch and drill a corner three to give Goodrich a 48-43 lead heading into the fourth. After clawing back all game, Haslett finally took the lead with 6:48 left in the fourth when [player_tooltip player_id='751132' first='Avery' last='Hannah'] sank a contested three in the corner to put the Vikings ahead 50-48. [player_tooltip player_id='613007' first='Ella' last='Place'] drained a straightaway three to put Goodrich up 56-54, but [player_tooltip player_id='773894' first='Kaitlyn' last='Johnson'] answered with an offensive rebound putback to tie it up again with 1:39 left in the fourth. With time winding down, [player_tooltip player_id='614706' first='Tanner' last='Schramm'] made a crucial block from behind on a potential lead-changing layup by Haslett, and [player_tooltip player_id='614704' first='Kayla' last='Hairston'] finished the play by taking a charge in the paint to give Goodrich a chance to win the game with 27 seconds left. After [player_tooltip player_id='807312' first='Baylor' last='Lauinger'] beat defenders off the dribble to score the go-ahead layup with roughly 3 seconds remaining, Haslett worked the ball down the court and called a timeout to draw up a sideline inbounds play. The shot attempt was unsuccessful and Goodrich held on to advance with a 58-56 win. This was a thrilling game between two great teams and I'm thankful I was there to see it.

Kayla was locked in from the beginning of the Regional Finals against Haslett. She drained two triples and scored a strong and-one layup to give Goodrich nine points in the first three minutes of the first quarter. Kayla created steals, pursued offensive rebounds, knocked down free throws, set up teammates, and buried two more triples in the second half. She took a charge with 27 seconds left, which allowed Goodrich to seal the win on their next possession. Kayla led the team with 23 points and played her best in the biggest game of the season.

Ella is known for her sharpshooting and she poured in timely triples for Goodrich during their Regional Finals win. Ella buried confident 3s from different spots including a straightaway triple to give the Martians a 56-54 lead with 1:39 left in the fourth quarter. Her quick release, balance, and sound mechanics make her an efficient marksman. Her ball handling and poise under pressure is an asset for the Martians and Ella would be an excellent addition to a college program. She poured in 14 points during their victory on Wednesday.

Baylor closed out the game for Goodrich when she beat defenders on a downhill drive to score a contested layup with three seconds left, putting the Martians ahead for good, 58-56. She made winning plays for the team all night, scoring offensive rebound putbacks, finishing contested layups with both hands, dropping in floaters, generating steals, and making the hustle plays. Baylor poured in 14 points for the Martians in their Regional Final victory vs. Haslett and showed her confidence under pressure.

Kaitlyn was close to unstoppable for Haslett during their Regional Finals game vs. Goodrich on Wednesday. She muscled her way into position to secure and score several offensive rebound putbacks. Kaitlyn finished a nifty fake-pass left-handed layup through a foul and a smooth reverse layup. She converted clutch free throws from the charity stripe and dominated the glass with 14 rebounds. One of her best moves was a crossover spin dribble that she used to beat her defender to score a layup off two feet. She used the spin dribble again to score an and-one layup off the glass. Kaitlyn led the Vikings with 22 points and her determined performance kept Haslett close to the very end.

Avery is a sniper from beyond the arc and on Wednesday she set a new Haslett record for three-pointers made in a season with 57. Her perimeter shooting helped the Vikings compete to the very end against Goodrich. Avery's most impressive shot happened in the fourth quarter when she fired a rapid-release corner three with a defender's outstretched hand barely missing the ball to give Haslett a 50-48 lead with 6:28 left in the fourth quarter. Avery created steals on defense and finished one with a transition layup. She knocked down four triples in the game and poured in 14 points for Haslett.

Christina stepped up her game in the second half, giving the Vikings 11 points with five coming from the free throw line. She crossed over a defender and blew by on a straight-line drive to earn free throws, making both. Christina secured rebounds, elevated to block a shot, and swiped a steal to score a layup. She poured in 14 points for Haslett and her play in the second half helped the Vikings mount a fierce comeback.
