Northwest Talent at Portland Boys Showcase’s Charity Giveback

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The annual Portland Boys Showcase attracted a huge community gathering this past Sunday at Unthank Park in North Portland. The mission was a back-to-school supplies giveaway and a basketball showcase. She's been working extremely hard over the summer to improve her game, and she plays with tremendous heart and confidence. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>It's her “never back down” demeanor and “never quit” attitude that push her teammates to success on the basketball court. Camryn is a quick athlete who can truly explode to the basket. She has incredible passing abilities and can shoot the rock from anywhere on the court. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Camryn is a friendly teammate and is always sure to encourage others and lift their spirits when needed most. She really shone at the park and helped her team by scoring at the rim and getting a lot of assists in transition. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>When Camryn was asked what her favorite thing was about the showcase event? She said, “My favorite thing about today was the community. I always find it great and fun when a whole bunch of girls come together and hoop. We had a great time with good competition, but we all still love each other and that's the beauty in basketball.”</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Camryn shared with us that her older cousin Vernon inspires her most in basketball. He is a coach in the community and has always been a strong influence in her family. She also paid tribute to her cousin Nylah. She said seeing them have a “go-getter” mentality made her want to make a name for herself.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Her goals for next season are to become more aggressive and more disciplined. Camryn plans to stay hungry on offense and take more shots, as well as play better defense and go for every loose ball and rebound. She's been standing out and shining amongst her peers throughout her high school career at Nelson in basketball. Daughter of former NBA star Martell Webster, Nylah takes after her father with her talents on the court. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>She has great size for a guard and plays at a fast-paced speed that leaves her opponents in a foot race trying to catch her. She's able to really get creative on offense and change directions in mid-air, which opens up space for her to score. On defense, she's great at locking up her opponents and blocking shots with her impressive wingspan. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>As a sharp shooter, Nylah shone at the Portland Boys showcase by winning the girls 3 3-point competition. She scored an impressive 14 threes in a minute of time. She also made the game-winning shot on the court in a heated team battle to reach 50 points first.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Nylah's consistency is what's carrying her far and will land her a Division 1 scholarship at a school of her choice. She's been working hard in the off-season with her Jason Kidd AAU program. She's standing out and competing against other top talent in the United States and internationally.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Nylah is dedicated to improving her game and getting training time in any day she can. It will be exciting to see how she does her senior year at Nelson. She was making it rain on a sunny day in the 3-point competition. She scored an impressive 13 threes in a minute of time, earning her 2nd place in the contest. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Kelyn is a hard worker with a quiet yet tenacious demeanor. She has a huge heart and a strong willingness to help her teammates succeed. She's always smiling off the court but has tenacious grit during gameplay. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Kelyn has been working extremely hard in the off-season and traveling with her ML20 program. Her goals this season are to help Benson get far in the state playoffs. Be on the lookout for this rising star. She can handle the ball as a point guard or shoot the lights out as a shooting guard. She's a multifaceted player with a tremendous heart and strong work ethic. She's a strong defender and is known for her on-ball approach to stopping opponents. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>A team captain and leader for Benson, Key has tremendous court vision and is great at helping her teammates succeed by encouraging them on and off the floor. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>During this weekend's showcase, Key helped lead her team to victory in a close battle. She knocked down some “key” free throws down the stretch. She's a sharp shooter and all around team player. She can throw down in the kitchen, just as skilled as she is on the court. Whether she's cooking up her team's favorite mac and cheese or cooking up her defenders on the court, Claire's serving up some wins! </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>This weekend, Claire shone at the showcase with her passing abilities. She led the way down the stretch by assisting her teammates to victory. It's not a surprise; she also stepped up during the 3-point contest and volunteered to be the passing assistant.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>In this upcoming season, Claire's goals are to improve her fundamentals and be more of an offensive threat. She would like to improve her confidence as well. Be on the lookout for this court chef.
