Beyond Scoring: The Hidden Talents of Young Basketball Players

Here the rhythm. The ball was bouncing. Shoes squeaking. The ball went through the net. That right there is the magic of basketball.    Anytime I am in a gym, I always watch the game with the phrase “what else” in mind. Sure that kid can score, but what else can she do? Can she defend? Can she rebound? How is she when the ball is not in her hands? What type of movements does she make on the floor? See, to be successful in this game, it's not all about scoring but what else can you do to contribute to your team's success. Sure, scoring a bunch of points gets the headlines, however that doesn't necessarily always equate to winning. What else can you do? How else can you leave your mark on the game?   Here are a few ladies who answer the “what else” questions who play the game of basketball.    Known for her scoring acumen, don't sleep on her ability to distribute the ball. A talented kid who has a good feel for being on the floor. She can play with the ball in her hands or without, whatever the case maybe, she is a threat when she is on the floor. Plays with an unbelievable motor, she is going to give you all she has and then some. Look for her to have a big time year and bring some other things to the table throughout the season.     This young lady is the real deal and a true “ what else” type of kid. She is going to give you points for sure. Also, she is the ultimate floor distributor around the state. What people kind of estimate is her ability to play tough on the defensive end. Steals, deflections, locking someone up, yeah she gives you a ton of advantages when she is on the floor. UAB is getting a steal in this young lady, but until she steps foot on campus in Birmingham, you better believe she will be tearing up the hardwood floors in Tennessee.     Hard working kid who can not only score the basketball, but impact the game in a multitude of ways. I love her ability to rebound, block shots, and defend. Then when it comes to the offensive side of the ball, she is going to score, stretch the floor, and get O boards. She competes every time she steps onto the floor. A solid prospect who is on the upswing.     Another young lady who is going to compete from tip-off to the final whistle. Her defense becomes her offense as she locks up the opposition. She can score from all 3 levels, however it's how she goes about competing on the defensive side of the ball that sets her apart from others. If you are looking for a heady ballplayer who is selfless, communicates, and is willing to do whatever, this is the young lady you need in your program. A solid kid with a bright future.     A dual sport athlete who is about to play a significant role in the next steps of her ball club. Blessed with size and speed, this young lady can stretch the floor and pound in the paint. Inside, she brings a dominant presence that opens up things for herself and those around her. She's big time on the boards, can block shots, and really compete on both ends. Look for her to come out and establish a role early with her team. When she's on the floor, good things tend to happen.     I feel like she is one of the most overlooked kids right now who will be suiting up for the Lady Mustangs this upcoming year. She is a player who can stretch the floor, knock down the 3 ball, but also compete in the interior and battle. She is big on the boards on both ends, can defend, and really gives her all. What I also like about her game is her willingness to go get a bucket, as well as facilitate the rock. A hungry kid who will be beneficial to the Lipscomb program.
