The Champs and MVP

The 5A Favorites capped off a busy December that saw them take the early lead in their district race with a win over Del City. They traveled to the Nike Tournament of Champions and beat out of state teams. Then finished up as Mustang Holiday Classic champs. While it was a familiar face and tournament MVP at the heart of this week's run, a few key role players who stepped up on Monday and Wednesday.

On Monday it was senior Raegan Greenroyd's scoring and defense that helped snap them out of an early funk. Then on Wednesday junior Lilly Taliaferro brought energy off the bench. She had a fantastic "And 1" in the second quarter that helped break open a close game. She kept it up with great hustle and defense. Sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='913691' first='Jailiana' last='Salas'] even knocked home a couple threes in the second half to really pour it on for Newcastle.

Next up for the Racers includes a January 12th trip to Bishop McGuinness for a pivotal district game. They'll also host the "Sweet Pea Invitational" January 22nd-24th.

Kindred is impressive because she makes the game look easy. Glides to the rim on drives, and seemed to always finishes. Casually swats shots at the rim. Or picks off passes. She's one of Oklahoma's star prospects and it showed as she was the difference in all three Newcastle wins. Scored 22 in the hard fought battle against Edmond North. With Newcastle needing every one on of them. Had 17 in the title game as they cruised to the victory.

Fantastic week for the top returnee for the 2A runner ups. She was a clutch performer last year during the semifinals and it's translated in her elevated role. Still has the sparkplug, tough defensive hustle moments with "gimme that" steals and more.

Has made big strides as a handler, and a driver. Attacks fast but under control, able to get to the rim and hit tough shots. Scores off two feet, with a half hook type shot that is aided by her athletic ability to really elevate quickly off the floor.

Helped her small town team to a big upset on Monday, then an overtime win on Tuesday to help them to a runner up finish in a loaded tournament. Davis is writing quite the legacy in her small town before heading off the Southern Nazarene. And seems to have quite the leadership role for the Lady Miners.

Free throws carried Jackson's scoring production in the opening game. And then she steadily heated up in the next two games. Great mid-range pull ups, with strong fakes and stops on dimes to get open. Nailed plenty of spot up threes. And of course muscled her way to the rim and scored or earned trips to those lines. She's a hard nosed guard who has always brought it with hustle and been a quality secondary scorer. Now, she's closing her Lady Husky career as a go to bucket getter. Had 25 points in the third place game on Wednesday.

It was a tough call between Ohm and her fellow senior Asia Blackledge. But the post was their most consistent scorer. No matter the team, her throwback moves on the block produced. Great touch and feel on those buckets. Finished with a very impressive 19 points against a tough Edmond North team to put a capper on a great tournament. Clearly is ready to lead Alva on another potential 3A State Tournament run.

The sharpshooter helped Mustang rebound from a shock opening game loss to go 2-1 on the weekend. Was in double figures of both the wins. She has one of the cleanest jumpers in the state. And will be relied upon to continue to add scoring around her three point shooting to power Mustang as they attempt to replicate last year's run to the 6A Title game

Franklin drives and attacks like a taller guard. Was a problem all weekend with a fearless playing style. Can adjust on the fly to make the right passes to her teammates, making her a true combo guard. Is deceptively shifty with her ability to change gears and make ball fakes. Seemed to pop up with timely threes in the second half of every game this week.

Like the potential for her to be scoring clutch buckets during a Class A player run for the Wildcats. As she's a hard nosed guard with the a high skill level. Her toughness is evident as she has battled back from a major injury to still be a fearless and confident player.

Second straight fantastic game from the freshman. She plays to her size and maybe even a little taller on both ends of the court. Went for 9 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks. Good mix of timing and verticality to block and contest shots without fouling. Sky appears to be the limit and looking forward to continuing to monitor her progress.

Strong finish to the tournament for Haywood. Was in double figures scoring to close out the event, but impact went beyond that. Was credited 3 steals and importantly 4 assists. She's known for her wingspan, athleticism and defensive timing. But development on the offensive end is needed to unlock her own and Mustang's ceiling this year.

While Haywood was getting the steals, the feisty wing was also causing havoc in her own way on Wednesday. She also has a long wingspan and is strong, leading to a couple blocks at the rim. Can also move her feet and hound defenders along the perimeter. Picked her spots to score 8 points today. Had flashes as a connector type passer, but also had issues with turnovers. Clean up some of her inaccurate passes and Boykins can have a big second semester to close out her high school career.
