One thing about basketball is that everything is generally up for debate. What I mean is that water-cooler talk is prevalent among fans and coaching circles. Sometimes what people say can seem a little far-fetched, but at the same time, they can make a valid point.

So let's dive a little deeper into what I would like to talk about.

Today I wanted to talk about the point guard position. In order to be successful at this level or any level matter of fact, you have to have a girl(s) that can handle the ball. They have to be able to run the show. These kids have to handle pressure, run an efficient offense, and score when the opportunity arises. Now, there are different types of PGs out there, and coaches have their own flavor, per se, but in general, the girls who play this particular position must have a high basketball IQ, solid handles, and play with poise.

When talking to coaches and media personnel, one always hears both sides about who the best PGs in the state are. Well, that comes with a wide array of loaded responses, and it's obviously filled with many answers. In my opinion, that would be hard to answer given the wide array of skill sets and competition levels in our state. You almost have to look at matchups and who can go against whom. So, if we were to go a little more in-depth with it, you would come up with a ton of answers based on your opinions.

Let's start off by looking at the Miss Basketball Finalists who are PGs.

Division II-A

[player_tooltip player_id='780456' first='Jules' last='Ferrell']- MTCS

Division II-AA

Meeya Green- Knox Webb

[player_tooltip player_id='513237' first='Ava' last='Jarrett']- Lipscomb Academy

Class 1A

[player_tooltip player_id='514124' first='Zoey' last='Nicholas']- Pickett Co.

[player_tooltip player_id='1133760' first='Rayanna' last='Fisher']- Greenfield

Laila Downs-Darden- McEwen

Class 2A

[player_tooltip player_id='513230' first='Maliyah' last='Glaspar']- Gatlinburg-Pittman

[player_tooltip player_id='816635' first='Kaegan' last='Young']- Cascade

Class 3A

[player_tooltip player_id='593347' first='Chelby' last='Jordan']-Dyersburg

Class 4A

[player_tooltip player_id='513233' first='Natalya' last='Hodge']- Bearden

This list alone has some names who are legit in their own right. Though their game has different styles, each of these girls can flat-out play. Many may also know that this list of kids plays basketball outside the school setting (in a high-level travel ball format). Keep in mind that I do feel AAU puts kids on a different trajectory, making them sharpen their skills more quickly than usual due to its fast pace. That AAU debate is another story we will have to revisit.

My point in looking at the young ladies listed is that when you have a highly-touted PG who can do a multitude of things, your success rate goes up, as they can exploit an opponent in many ways. I am only touching on the offensive side of the ball, but if they can lock up on the defensive end as well, man, you've got a steal in a kid.

Though the girls I named above are up for Miss Tennessee, there is still a crop of young talent out there that plays the PG position at a high level, too.

[player_tooltip player_id='514123' first='Nori' last='Jamison']- Ensworth

[player_tooltip player_id='821670' first='Jade' last='Watson']- MTCS

[player_tooltip player_id='513232' first='Nya' last='Burns']- Grace Christian Academy

Mimi Lee- Notre Dame

[player_tooltip player_id='822483' first='Ava' last='Zenner']- FRA

[player_tooltip player_id='583370' first='Skylar' last='Walden']- TKA

[player_tooltip player_id='792678' first='Charley' last='Rae Hutchison']- CPA

[player_tooltip player_id='899791' first='Kamora' last='Moore']- Hamilton Heights

[player_tooltip player_id='1327088' first='Franziska' last='Kelly']- Collierville

[player_tooltip player_id='821873' first='Kinsley' last='Owen']- Silverdale

(and a host of others throughout the state.)

To be a top PG in our state, you must:

Have Court Vision/ Basketball IQ

Be the floor general

Defend

Contribute to other phases of the game

You are the quarterback, the focal point, and you must command the team. Communication also needs to be of high quality as well. In order to be the best, you must possess these qualities. Our state has girls who are and will be steals for programs at the next level. I am not saying that we breed PGs, but we have some darn good ones within our borders.

So, going back to who the best PG is in our state or who the top ones are, that's debatable. It's almost like saying who is the best PG in NBA history. You will compare styles, numbers, years, what they have done for their team, who they play against, and so on. It's literally a debate that can go on and on. My take, if we are being transparent, I think if a kid is consistently doing what they do against top-tier talent and stacking up numbers, they deserve to be in the best PG conversation. I have always said numbers don't lie, but if you can consistently get them against the best competition, you get my vote. So, who is the top PG in the state? It depends.

Just know, Tennessee is women's basketball, and we have some dynamic point guards who run this!
